CEOs often had no way of tracking the real-time progress of multiple projects without walking over for a conversation or sending out an email. CTOs would divert their attention away from innovation to solve infrastructural challenges like ensuring that remote designers had access to the necessary tools and data files. Collaboration, while very much part of the culture, was limited to team meetings followed by multiple emails about the same.

While these challenges are not limited to startups, the demanding ecosystem within which a startup needs to innovate, accentuates the need for a solution. And in a time of a global health crisis like we are currently facing, having tools to track a team’s projects from anywhere and for those teams to effectively collaborate regardless of location is vital to running a business of any size.

The Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the Cloud is a holistic solution for startups in any industry to overcome multiple levels of silos and bring their focus back to innovation. It is an all–in-one Cloud solution that combines IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform being at the center of the experience. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform brings together industry leading solutions for all aspects of your business in the form of applications on your ‘dashboard’ and powers them with Cloud computing. From project planning to manufacturing, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is the single source of truth to manage and track all business activities across multiple teams in real time.

From ideation to execution, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform provides you with the right solution at the right time, all through your web browser.

Below are 5 ways how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform can bring value to your startup:

No more worrying about IT

A startup’s resources are far too valuable to spend significant capital on buying servers and managing them. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the Cloud is secured, maintained and updated by Dassault Systèmes, with dedicated 24/7 customer service. It takes less than 25 minutes to set up a new user, and its functionality can be scaled up or down as per your team’s requirements. No more worrying about not having enough infrastructure or paying for infrastructure that you don’t need.

Tools you need, when you need them

With the largest portfolio of applications available on any PaaS, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is a one-stop solution for everything from data management and project management to 3D design, advanced simulations and manufacturing. It includes industry-leading Dassault Systèmes solutions like CATIA, ENOVIA, BIOVIA and DELMIA. By choosing the ‘roles’ best suited to your scope of work, you can access the applications best suited to your specific requirements and can even add or remove them on demand. Since these applications are all on the Cloud, you no longer need to worry about space and computing power on your hardware.

Social Collaboration

The 3DSWYM application allows you to create and comment on posts within online communities on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Here you can share ideas, progress reports, media content and data files across different teams within your startup – and also your customers! You can manage the access to each community to ensure that the information shared is protected and viewed only by its intended audience. The ENOVIA Project Planner application allows you to create and take ownership of or assign tasks to your team members and track their progress in real time. You can also comment on tasks to provide updated details about the same.

Sharing and viewing data files has never been easier

Applications like 3DDrive and 3DPlay allow users to save, share and view high resolution renderings of files created in Dassault Systèmes solutions like CATIA and SOLIDWORKS. There is no more sifting through files to find the required parts; they can all be accessed through 3DEXPERIENCE platform where they are displayed as 3D models. This eliminates file and part redundancy and increases efficiency in project completion. Not a product designer? No problem. Applications like 3D Drive and Media links allow anyone to store and display all types of media content.

3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace

Need something to be 3D printed but don’t know anyone who can do it? The 3DEXPERIENCE Marketplace allows you to find service providers for all your design and manufacturing needs through the very same platform. You can check the availability of parts with your manufacturer and update your designs accordingly in a seamless manner. Manage your relationships with different vendors and suppliers through the same platform in which your product is being designed.

Interested in seeing how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the Cloud can help your company? For 90 years, the company has continuously supplied new and optimized products, such as hydraulic excavators and crawler cranes, to their customers around the globe.

The machinery industry is a fast-moving and changing business, so adaption and flexibility are key. To remain competitive and to better adapt to technological changes and customer requests, Kobelco Construction Machinery implemented a Smart Factory initiative, based on three fundamental areas:

Engineering Process Transformation – to be more efficient in the production process

Unified Plant Management Information – to centrally manage all data

Automation ahead of standardization – to improve the work environment

Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform helps the company to support this initiative and therefore transform their business processes. The integrated production system on the platform enables sustainable management of global manufacturing operations while the whole product development becomes more efficient through the use of 3D modeling and digital simulation. All information related to the production process can be shared in real-time with all stakeholders, leading to better collaboration and improved traceability.

Complexity is an everyday reality for airports. A positive passenger experience depends on multiple departments, individual staff, airlines, retail and hospitality all working together seamlessly.

With so many dependencies between different functions, a single event such as a staff member off sick can have a ripple effect, causing disruption in other departments unless it’s managed effectively.

Airports like Copenhagen Airport are using digital technologies to rise to the challenge. The solutions they put in place combine three essential ingredients for agile and efficient management of complex operations.

Visibility

Being able to see what’s happening on the ground across the airport, in real time, is vital for resolving issues before they become problems. To do that, it’s essential to collect the data from multiple sources – such as shift patterns, gate times, equipment performance and key performance indicators – in one place. An integrated platform views the airport as a whole system, providing planners a clear, real-time picture of operations across the airport, including any changes as they occur.

Planning

In an airport, no two days are the same, so a plan built on generalizations is likely to crumble. Robust planning is built on accurate visibility and analysis. Advanced analytics and machine learning can identify patterns in today’s data and predict what will happen. For example, operators can see tomorrow’s likely flight cancellations, how long it will take to complete a task, or what the passenger load will be in a week’s time. This also enables the simulation of “what-if” scenarios to explore strategies and resolve potential issues before they happen.

Optimization

Turning plans into action is the way to get results. Whether it’s planned maintenance or an unexpected disruption, the entire organization needs to be agile enough to move with it.

A powerful optimization engine with predictive analytics and autonomous planning capabilities can help airports to understand everything from staff utilization to trends in passenger demand, so they can make better decisions and improve staff management. With all the data in one place, being able to see real-time updates and interact with ground staff on a single platform can enable lightning reflexes. This means, for example, that an issue in one area can be quickly resolved with minimal impact on other departments.

For 20 years, SOLIDWORKS WORLD was a key event in the design community. This year, it became 3DEXPERIENCE World, marking the evolution of a brand loved for its unique user experience that removes the friction between the creative process of design and the realization of a product.

With 3DEXPERIENCE World, Dassault Systèmes and its brands open up the power of a human-centric approach to technology and innovation. With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, designers can develop experiences that are highly personal and supported with connections through value networks that are continually emerging.

“This is about the future,” Bernard Charles, Vice Chairman and CEO of Dassault Systèmes, told the audience, “and this is about SOLIDWORKS WORLD becoming 3DEXPERIENCE World. In one way, you have moved from flat drawings to 3D. We want to give you the possibilities to move from 3D to life experiences, to virtual twin experiences, to really transform the way you do your business . . . Everyone is talking about the future. This is a place where we are talking about the future together.”

The magic started with Magic Wheelchair, an international organization that aims to provide every kid in a wheelchair with an epic costume that echoes her or his dreams and passions, at no cost to the parents. Magic Wheelchair delivers on this wonderful mission by connecting volunteer makers with kids, designing with help from Dassault Systèmes’ software solutions. The project is being accelerated through Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Lab and supported by La Fondation.

The magic continued with Mike Schultz – Paralympic gold and silver medalist, 10-time X-Games gold medalist, inventor and company founder of BioDapt – which designs, manufactures and distributes high performance and highly versatile lower limb prosthetic components that enable amputees to participate in sports and activities.

In 2008, Schultz lost his leg in a snowmobiling accident. Ten years later, he won a gold medal at the Paralympic Games using a prosthetic leg he designed in his garage using SOLIDWORKS. Today Mike’s company makes prosthetics for people around the world and works with fellow athletic competitors. He has also collaborated with the Center for Advanced Designs, a creative agency in Elk River, Minnesota, USA that specializes in the creation of complex surface geometries to continue his prosthetic evolution.

Also joining in onstage was Matt Carney, who holds a PhD from MIT. He is working on taking the future of prosthetics farther by connecting cybernetic interfaces to the human body to enable direct control of robotic limbs. Matt is focused on eventually creating full biological capabilities in artificial limbs.

That was just Day 1. You can see the full recap of the first day’s session here.

The over 6,000 attendees barely had a chance to catch their breath, greeting old friends, networking and joining in at their choice of 350 technical sessions that included lecture-style breakouts, hands-on workshops and expert-led panel discussions. Each session delivered rich experiences about the latest innovations for 3D design, data management, simulation and manufacturing.

Gian Paolo Bassi opened the Day 2 general session with a serious discussion.

“In my opinion, this is probably the most important session of this 3DEXPERIENCE World convention,” he said. “You know, it is not easy to present in front of a crowd like this – competent, smart and very passionate people. The reason that I said that this is probably the most important session is because this is about research and development . . . This very special team is going to show you what is happening now and what will happen in the future. It’s a glimpse into the future of SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE World.”

Florence Hu-Aubigny, Executive Vice President, Research and Development, Dassault Systèmes

With that, he introduced Florence Hu-Aubigny, Dassault Systèmes Executive Vice President, Research and Development, who opened and managed the session with her R&D team. It was especially critical for showing and getting familiar with the capabilities of Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform and understanding how entire organizations can leverage 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS right now to take advantage of the platform and across multiple Dassault Systèmes brands.

Day 2 also featured a panel with four customers from different countries who shared their journeys as SOLIDWORKS users who have successfully adopted 3DEXPERIENCE solutions; and in parallel on Tuesday morning, nearly 300 DELMIAWORKS customers joined forces for the first time with SOLIDWORKS users. Steve Bieszczat, Chief Marketing Officer of DELMIAWORKS, welcomed everyone and highlighted the mission to address the MES (manufacturing execution system) and ERP (enterprise resource planning) needs of small to mid-sized manufacturing companies around the world.

You can see the full recap of the Day 2 session here.

The final day of 3DEXPERIENCE World started by showcasing user communities around the world and the passion of our users, which often starts at a young age when they are in school. The first guest speaker was Sam Rogers from Gravity, a UK startup where even the sky is not the limit – they make Jet suits that push the next frontier in human flight. Sam shared the company’s process for designing and fabricating their current jet suit.

Next came a key moment of the event – the legendary Dean Kamen, founder of DEKA and FIRST Robotics, inventor of the insulin pump and a STEM champion, spoke to the packed audience. He briefly covered his career path, the many innovations and future endeavors, but focused on imagination and inspiration.

Legendary inventor Dean Kamen addresses the general session at 3DEXPERIENCE World

“While I’ve never had a plan in life and I really have never had a business plan, I just seize opportunities that connect the dots between a real need, good people and then you never know what happens,” he said. “I try to do good and it turns sometimes into something where you can do well . . . and so I’m going to show you a smattering of projects to show you how bizarre it is that if you connect good people with good technology, you can make a difference.”

You can see the full recap of the Day 3 session and Dean Kamen’s talk here.

And there was more!

One of our highest priorities is helping students build the career of their dreams. With that goal in mind, students were invited to attend 3DEXPERIENCE World for free. More than 200 came, and in addition to the event, we organized a job fair and panel discussions relevant to their journey to be great engineers.

Over 300 people took Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS certification exams on Sunday before the conference and 160 passed and walked away with a certification, including of CSWP’s, CSWA’s, and Platform Explorer Associates.

New this year, we featured the 3DEXPERIENCE for Good Hackathon and other interactive experiences that pull together the most passionate minds to do GOOD.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Playground was a huge techno fair of hardware and software solutions with 77 exhibitors across a spectrum of innovative technologies.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Pitch Battle. Four startups presented to the audience and best two chosen by the audience evaluated by judges. The winner was Winter Innovations, makers of EasyWhip, a patent-pending suturing needle designed to make whip stitching easier in orthopedic surgery.

These are just some of the highlights. The excitement and innovation goes on all year with local user groups. And 3DEXPERIENCE World is already set for next year. Mark your calendars now to join your friends and colleagues again in Nashville, February 7-10, 2021 for meeting, training, networking and fun.

From Experience and the Minds of Innovators Comes Modern Life

Energy and materials forms the basis for life, providing the raw materials for infrastructure for our cities and industry, electricity for our homes, and fertilizers for our food. They are the essential ingredients for all aspects of our lives. Pharmaceuticals, plastics, paints, and countless other necessities we depend on are all derived from petrochemicals. The smartphones we carry in our pockets contain more than 60 minerals mined from across the globe.

Throughout human history, innovators have tapped the raw materials of the earth to make the world we live in better. They have harnessed rivers, atoms, the sun and wind to provide energy, and are today working on modular power plants, energy sharing, deploying electric fleets in their operations, and on chemical formulations that will help plastics biodegrade.

We are entering a golden age of energy and materials innovation as technology is changing who can bring new ideas to market. Innovators like Minesto, who have dreamed a new way to capture sustainable energy by flying kites under the sea, are pushing long established players to transform their business models so they too can once again think and act like startups.

European Spallation Source is bringing together Neutron-based scientific research minds from around the world to shed light on some of nature’s greatest mysteries by analyzing the structure and dynamics of materials in ways other research techniques cannot. In areas such as energy, health, materials and the environment, scientists will utilize the multi-disciplinary research facility to see and understand atomic structures and forces.

New ways to collaborate and simulate are driving ideation, allowing concepts to be proven in the virtual world, making it possible to think outside of the box in ways that that would be prohibitive in the real one. We are witnessing increasingly interconnected value chains that are being drawn more closely together to enable new products and efficiencies to be discovered together by suppliers, constructors, makers, and end customers.

The power of experience is at the heart of the work being done by today’s pioneers in energy and materials. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE® platform is enabling them to see the world in new ways, through virtual universes that connect the dots between people, processes, and data so they can understand the past to navigate the future. With it, they experience the future today as they imagine, engineer, and deliver the possibilities of tomorrow.

Where will the next energy and materials breakthrough come from next, will you make it?

See how you can “Experience the Future Today” with Dassault Systèmes.

In the digital age, an airport’s role is far greater than connecting people with flights. With demand for air travel expected to double by 2037 and digitally connected travelers demanding ever more seamless, personalized experiences, airports are under pressure to become transport infrastructure nodes that can redefine the passenger experience.

Smart airports such as Las Vegas McCarron International, London Heathrow and Hong Kong International are using advanced data sharing technology. This way, they focus on collaboration between airlines, retailers, transport providers and other partners to create a unique and personalized passenger experience.

A digital twin enables the creation of a 3D virtual experience of the entire terminal. These virtual spaces use operational and passenger data from multiple sources to provide an exact twin of the airport that opens new ways of thinking about planning, innovation and collaboration.

Using a digital twin, airports and their maintenance partners can see clearly where planned or urgent maintenance is needed, which airport operations it will affect, and how it can be carried out with minimal disruption. But the technology empowers airports to do much more than keep things running smoothly.

With space at a premium, airports are looking to self-service check-in, remote baggage drops and public transport baggage delivery services to further optimize flow and free space for other uses.

A digital twin enables the flexibility and collaboration needed to maximize the positive impact of these changes on the passenger experience. It can provide a clear, real-time picture, for instance, of exactly how a digital way-finding solution will optimize passenger flow and increase time and spend at retailers and restaurants. And, with powerful predictive analytics, it enables multiple stakeholders to visualize, plan and manage the flexible use of spaces to serve passengers’ immediate needs.

Data sharing, virtual and augmented reality technologies also give airports a unique opportunity optimize travelers’ retail experience and maximize revenues. Airports can engage with passengers as they move around the airport, seamlessly blending personalized convenience with a consistent brand experience. That could be a unique offer on a traveler’s mobile device, an immersive in-store experience or a super-fast download for their in-flight entertainment. Knowing who, how and when to engage enables the airport to create true value.

Visit our website to find out how the 3DEXPERIENCE® platform can help airports use digital twins to redefine the passenger experience.

Eco-industrial parks (EIPs) are growing in number as businesses seek ways to boost sustainability and reduce environmental impact. In these cooperative ecosystems, businesses on a shared site work together on the principle of industrial symbiosis, exchanging and reusing resources such as materials, energy, water and by-products. Their goal is to create competitive advantage while reducing waste and pollution, protecting the environment and enriching local communities.

Each EIP is unique: some have been specially designed, while others have evolved over time. The Kalundborg ecopark in Denmark, for example, evolved gradually through the cooperation of neighboring industries. Here, the use of surplus heat from a coal-fired power plant to heat local homes cuts the amount of thermal pollution discharged to a nearby fjord. A local fish farm, which also benefits from the surplus heat, sells its sludge as a fertilizer. Steam from the power plant is sold to a pharmaceutical and enzyme manufacturer and a petroleum plant. A by-product of the power plant’s sulfur-dioxide scrubber meets almost all the gypsum needs of a wallboard manufacturer, while the plant’s fly ash and clinker are sold on for road building and cement production.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Chemelot is focusing on shared knowledge and sustainable processes and products to realize its vision of becoming the safest, most sustainable and competitive chemical site in western Europe by 2025.

Whatever their make-up, EIPs involve a complex network of interrelated value chains and processes. Some essential steps are needed to streamline coordination of those elements for optimal sustainability, innovation and growth.

Synchronize the value network

EIPs involve multiple layers of synchronization. Individual units and entire value chains must be harmonized to complement each other in terms of resource sharing, storage and distribution networks, markets and customers.

It’s critical to have a clear picture of how the various value chains interlink. First there is the big picture: optimizing the organization of production, storage and transportation of each product. Within that, smaller value chains also need to work efficiently together. This demands detailed production planning for every plant and for all shared resources. By collecting all the data in one place it’s possible to identify the most efficient sequences for all the production and resources across the EIP.

Communicate and collaborate

When companies in an EIP work are working in silos, sustainability becomes impossible – so it’s essential that everyone who needs it has up-to-date visibility on which plant needs what resources, when, how much and for how long.

Real-time collaboration is the only way to efficiently manage these environmental and resource issues. For example, if one business is using another’s surplus heat to produce its goods, it needs to know when that resource is available so it can schedule and respond to any variability in supply.

Optimize uptime

In the EIP environment, a problem at one plant can easily affect others down the line, potentially bringing entire value chains to a standstill. Collecting and analyzing data in one place is the key to preventing that.

For instance, a single source of information on design and construction can provide a clear picture of facilities, equipment and processes, enabling simple and timely reviews, updates and maintenance. Predictive and prescriptive maintenance tools, supported by virtual 3D simulation or digital twins, provide a collaborative virtual space in which to work out and schedule solutions to potential issues before they become a problem, and without disrupting processes.

Enable resilience

If an unexpected issue does occur, every unit in the EIP needs to be agile enough to adapt with minimal disruption. A single source of information enables the entire ecosystem to continuously readjust to events such as unexpected variabilities in the supply of materials and resources or a maintenance issue in an upstream plant. With robust planning and visibility, businesses can reoptimize what they’re doing to keep themselves and the value chain operating as efficiently as possible.

Build on a shared vision

Every EIP involves a unique variety of different entities, data points, schedules and interests that must be unified to achieve a shared vision. Bringing everyone’s data together on a single system, with powerful data processing and 3D simulation capabilities, provides the collaborative capability to align their interests.

By simplifying the scheduling of resources, production and engineering it enables the robust planning, operation and communication the EIP needs both for profitable and sustainable business and a positive impact on the ecology and communities around it.

US-based precision parts manufacturer Knust-Godwin is helping to answer that question for the oil and gas industry. The company has over 50 years of knowledge in traditional or subtractive manufacturing, so they’re capable of educating their customers on which manufacturing approach is best: subtractive or additive.

In the process of subtractive manufacturing, material is removed from your future-product with techniques such as milling and drilling. Whereas adding material to create a product is called additive manufacturing. This process adds one layer at the time with a special heating-technique that turns a non-solid material into a solid object. As the oil and gas industry is under extreme pressure to make their operations more efficient, Knust-Godwin plans to improve the production of complex and accurately manufactured parts by using both techniques.

Additionally, Knust-Godwin combines their manufacturing knowledge with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to simulate parts in 3D and show the results to the customer before ever printing a product. The platform also predicts build failures and measures stresses within materials to ensure customer satisfaction. However, some parts are not designed for the additive manufacturing process, but with the platform, they can be re-engineered and retested if it’s the best option. Using the platform with additive manufacturing, Knust-Godwin has been able to reduce the time to manufacture parts from 2 years to 8 months.

With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Knust-Godwin is able to make full use of the advantages of additive manufacturing and transform the oil and gas industry. Read the case study to get a detailed insight on how the company uses additive manufacturing. Watch the video to find out more about the company implementing the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Finally, take a look at one user’s perspective of how simulating a part on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform before additive manufacturing that part can save time and materials.
