Our favorite Sanford event (there, we said it!!) is just around the corner and even though many of you have already attended this fabulous community event (now in its 5th 6th 7th 8th year), the event is still growing rapidly, and that means, tons of Porchfest newbies will be joining us this year! We couldn’t be more excited about that, so we wanted to take a few minutes to give everyone who has never attended, or anyone who needs a few little reminders about the festival, some of our top tips on how to do Porchfest…

Now, let’s get started with the tips…

What to bring: 

• Cooler – for non-alcoholic drinks 😉 
• Lawn Chair/Blanket
• Reusable water bottle
• Cash – All of the porches have tip jars & the money goes right back into our community, more about this below. You will also come across kids raising money by selling things such a lemonade and cookies!
• Wagon, backbacks or something to carry around your Porchfest gear (or pals) easily
• Snacks or pack a picnic (support local businesses, we recommend stopping at the Sanford Farmer’s market or Magnolia Square Market for sandwiches and other items, or grab a coffee at one of the coffee shops downtown.)
• Sun protection: Sunscreen/Hat, sunglasses
• Comfy clothes and shoes for getting around 
• Hand wipes (towels) 
• Flashlight – Porchfest continues after dark so plan on making it back to your car or Downtown safely.
• Your Porchfest Outfit!! We get asked every year where we got our Porchfest tanks and shirts. The answer is simple: at the merch booth – BUT: you must come early!! These shirts sell out almost every year and if you want to look the part, you don’t want to miss out on these special (collectible) shirts. We actually wear them proudly year round!
• Your Game Plan: If you have time to come up with a Porchfest game plan ahead of time using the online map, write down your “must sees” as well as bands that might interest you, but in our experience, you’ll end up where you might least expect it in the end, just because the atmosphere and vibe was perfect in the moment. So our tip is: go with the flow, and discover new bands, and make new friends, that’s what Porchfest is all about! 
• A Positive Attitude and a Grateful Heart – Porchfest is an amazing community event and brings all of us together so be sure to be kind to one another and just enjoy the day! It takes a lot to make Porchfest happen and there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes before, during, and after Porchfest, so if you see someone in a volunteer shirt be sure to give them a high five! Thank the artists and vendors. And please remember that you are hanging out in a neighborhood and watching the bands live on someone’s porch so be sure to respect the area you are in. Dance. Smile. Eat. Laugh. Chat. Sing along and simply enjoy this amazing day!

Tips for going with kids:

• Kids will be kids! Let them have fun while they play tag, blow bubbles, etc. 
• We suggest making an attempt to leave the sports balls at home as we don’t want them hitting others with them nor do we want them running into the street after them (although this year all streets will be converted into pedestrian zones). 
• We suggest making sure you pack enough snacks to keep those active kids going.
• Invite their friends!! 
• Encourage the kiddos to enjoy the music and have a dance off.
• NEW this year: Special thanks to our KIDS ROCK! experience sponsor, The Learning Experience stop by Park on Park with the littles during the event to get crafty, explore with creative play, and meet new neighbors.
• Porchfest is a family friendly event and typically has little activities at (almost) every porch for the kids. You’ll find activities such as  chalk, so kids can decorate the sidewalks. In the past there has been a large fence piece that kids and adults alike are encouraged to paint on. In the past we have also seen lawn games setup, but maybe it would be a good idea to bring a portable bean toss or similar yard game of your own! 

Tips for going with pets:

• Don’t forget the leash, pets must be kept on a leash.
• Don’t forget water for your furry friend, we think they’d appreciate some snacks, too.
• Be aware of your pet and their reactions, check on them often and make sure they are okay with the large crowd and loud music. 
• Doggy bags, be courteous and please pick up after your pet. 

Where should I park?

Residents of the historic district will be very thankful if you could park anywhere in the designated FREE public parking lots around historic downtown. Below is a useful map that shows the best parking locations.

From most of these locations it will only be about a 5-10 minute walk until you get to the first porch. But trust us, it will be a beautiful walk, on a beautiful day (have you checked the weather forecast yet?).

Parking closer to the restaurants and bars in historic downtown is actually not a bad idea because that way you will certainly be tempted to stay for a little longer after the event and end the evening at one of our local businesses with a meal or drink (or better yet, both!).  There will also be a block party on Sanford Avenue following the event (Sanford Avenue Block Party). 

New this since 2023 is a FREE Trolley Service (sponsored by AAA Cares) with designated trolley stops that will bring you from your parking spot closer to the bands and more. Please see the map below or click here to download:

How to get around? Golf Cart, Bike, Walk 

We recommend walking since that is the best way to really get a feel for the beauty of the historic district. You get to experience what it means to live in this amazing neighborhood and since all the porches are so close together it won’t take you too long to get all the porch hopping done. After all, you wouldn’t attend Porchfest in high heels anyway, right?

Sorry, but no golf carts! The entire foot print of the event is pedestrian friendly! If you want to experience Sanford’s Golf Cart lifestyle, just pick another weekend to rent a golf cart, or ride it outside the festival footprint on Porchfest Saturday.

If you want you can of course also hitch a ride on one of the volunteer golf carts (in case you have to urgently get from A to B or are just too tired for the walk. Or even just to have some fun and experience the golf cart lifestyle that we Sanfordites are so proud of!

Last but not least, if you have a chance to bring your bike, then by all means, do it! Downtown Sanford is one of the best places to ride your bike – just keep in mind that it WILL be busy (please no bumping into pedestrians!) and that you will need lights once it gets dark (Porchfest ends after 7pm) or you might have to push your bike later in the evening (again, no big deal, luckily everything is so close by!)

Eats & Drinks

Many of the porches have food available for purchase but what’s better than ending your Porchfest Day with a good meal at one of our downtown restaurants? And then stay a little longer and enjoy a drink at one of our local breweries and bars.

We know, this event is all about making and sharing memories. You will always be able to look at the the fun photos that will take you back to Sanford Porchfest 2025 😉 So go ahead and take advantage of one or all of the great photo opportunities sprinkled throughout the event.

Your Donations Matter

“Sanford Porchfest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that unifies its community through music with the mission of enhancing access to and promoting the arts through educational scholarships. Built entirely on goodwill; from the organizers, artists, and homeowners – all of the proceeds from the festival (collected through donations, sponsorships, and merchandise sales) are returned to the community in the form of performing art summer camp tuition for select children.” 

As noted above, Sanford Porchfest is a nonprofit and the faces behind this organization are AMAZING! How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Downtown Sanford’s Holiday Window Display Contest

When: Vote for you favorite until December 17th!

What: Stroll the streets of Downtown Sanford and view participating Downtown Sanford businesses, Christmas window displays. Each participating window will have a prominently displayed QR code that, once scanned, directs to our Facebook event page where anyone can vote on their favorite display. Voting begins on Small Business Saturday and winners will be announced at Jingle Jam on December 17th. The People’s Choice winning business will be awarded a free one year membership to Sanford’s Chamber of Commerce!
In addition to People Choice voting, we have invited a few celebrity guest judges to pick the top three Grand Prize Winners! Stay tuned for the guest judge announcement coming soon!

Holiday Trunk Show

What: Join us for a day of holiday cheer and art with Darlene Allen and Melissa Menzer! If you’re in need of a little holiday magic, this is the event for you. Both artists will have packed their sleighs with new handmade, heirloom-quality creations to be unveiled at their annual trunk show.
The show will coincide with the Sanford Historic Trust’s Holiday Tour of Homes so plan for an extra dose of cheer.
Guests can expect a sampling of complimentary seasonal snacks and refreshments.
This will be their 9th annual holiday trunk show with us here at Jeanine Taylor Folk Art and is set to be our best yet.

33rd Annual Sanford Holiday Tour of Homes

When: December 3rd, 12pm-9pm

Where: Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 401 S Park Ave

What: Celebrate the warmth and spirit of the season at the 33rd Annual Holiday Tour of Homes on December 3rd, 12 to 9 pm. On this self-guided walking tour, step into the past as you are welcomed into ten of the Sanford Historic District’s most charming private residences. The tour route begins at Holy Cross Episcopal (Celebrating their 150 years) and ending at Park on Park where an old-fashioned holiday marketplace showcases a treasure trove of unique gifts, music and food trucks.

As you follow the glow of luminaries down brick-lined streets, the sounds of Victorian carolers fill the air. Take in the ambiance and explore the history of the district’s beautiful historic homes. Experience historic living firsthand as residents showcase their beautiful interiors, which are sure to inspire your own holiday décor. Enjoy festive treats along the way.

Ticket cost is $30 per person. Wristbands and a tour map must be picked up at Holy Cross Episcopal (Tour Check-In Headquarters) before beginning the tour. Please be advised that not all homes are handicap accessible and many have stairs. This event is rain or shine.

Toys for Tots Toy Drive Kickoff

Even with so many ???????? children to stuff in his sack and so many people around the world to terrify, Krampus is still finding time to honor us with a visit for the FIFTH year in a row!

We’ll give you the brief version: according to certain traditions, ??? ???????? (St. Nicholas) is sometimes accompanied by a “helper” to deal with the naughty kids while he reads stories and gives presents to the good kids: either Knecht Ruprecht or the feared unholy Dämon known as Krampus, who wears a basket to carry bad children away!
But in parts of Europe – and more recently, even here in North America – there’s also a growing tradition of people dressing up in frightening Krampus costumes and forming a parade in the village to wreak havoc in the streets, scream like demons, rattle chains and bells, and generally cause non-violent mayhem: the ???????????, or Krampus Run. Krampus was so impressed with last year’s turnout that he wants to see another Krampuslauf in Sanford this year, which will run at 8 pm from Hollerbach’s German Restaurant to our friends at West End Trading Co. just a few blocks away for a free heavy metal show!
????? ????????? ??????? ??????? ????? ??? ?? ????:
– This event is free to attend – no admission, no cover charge, no reservations

Carrie The Musical at Theater West End

Trunk-or-Treat!

What: The premiere entertainment center in Sanford is hosting the Truck-or-Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 29, starting at 1 p.m. Dress up the family in their costumes and enjoy an afternoon of food, drinks, activities and treats, of course! Admission is free.

Airport Lanes’ parking lot will be full of cars decked out with decorations, full of tasty treats and lined up for your trick-or-treating pleasure. During the event, guests can participate in the bowling pin painting party. Supplies are included and the pin is free to take home.

We arrived on the Ranch and were immediately Welcomed by Cedar, the barn’s Operations Manager. Cedar is a wealth of knowledge and seriously loves and cares so much for each of the ranch animals. All of the animals are obviously well cared for, spoiled and well loved – they are some of the cuddliest farm animals we have ever encountered!

Cedar and the rest of the Todd family grew up in New Orleans where Cedar’s Mom worked as a Vet Tech with a background in Zoology. Can you guess where Cedar’s love of animals came from? The family eventually moved to Florida in 2008, after enduring much loss while living in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. After losing most of their home they decided to make the move to Central Florida and began their new life in Winter Garden, where Cedar worked as a horse trainer. In 2021 the family packed up once more and moved to Sanford, where Red Horse Ranch was born due to the family’s love for animals.

The Todd family hopes to bring education and an appreciation for animals as well as the ranch lifestyle for all those that visit. As a way to keep the ranch affordable for all, the family is simply asking for donations upon your visit, but feel free to donate at any time if you also believe in what they are striving for. Their goal is to continue to bring in rescued animals, rehabilitate them and love on them well. Giving them a new future. The ranch currently has five Nigerian Dwarf Goats, four Horses, three calves and lots of chickens with names such as Beaker, Barney, Snowball…who by the way was swept over into the Ranch by a recent storm and simply decided to stay.

If you’d like to make some new furry and feathery friends we can’t recommend Red Horse Ranch enough, we had a hard time pulling ourselves away from all the cuteness this morning so you can assume that we will be back! If you’d like to visit the Ranch you can reach out to the Todd family via call or text (text is preferred) at 407-620-9175 or via email at redhorsesanford-at-gmail.com

Tours are private and by appointment only and include feeding, petting and interacting with the animals. Tours can be booked any day of the week from 9am-5pm, but please be kind and remember that this is ran by the family on their property and they are allowed to take breaks too. Once you have booked your tour, the address will be sent to you.

The ranch is also open to School groups, Birthday parties and such for a hands on learning experience. As noted above the ranch is donation based, if you’d like to make a monetary gift you can any time you visit the ranch or simply show your love at any time by donating via Venmo @Red-Horse-Sanford or via Zelle using the business phone number noted above.

The ranch also offers horse boarding, a riding program (which is currently full) and thirty minute introductory rides for children 12 and under. We have a feeling they are going to be a new favorite in Sanford!

These drinks are inspired by one of Sanford’s original bars, Smith’s Barroom. The Sanford Museum recently uncovered a list of drinks and flavorings dating all the way back to 1892 in its archives! So as you try each cocktail, imagine Victorian-era bar room owner John Smith as he is serving up everything from Budweiser to brandy in his establishment right here in Downtown Sanford! 

Here’s what you need to know about the challenge/tour:

• There are 11 bars/restaurants/breweries competing for the title “Best Drink” 
• The challenge runs throughout the month of April.
• You can take it as a challenge for the business owners, but also the patrons: will you be able to try and judge each one of these delicious and unique cocktails? Challenge accepted!
• Download the handy scorecard below to score your favorite drinks
• You’re drinking for a cause: 10% of the proceeds will benefit the Sanford Historical Society so they can uncover even more awesome facts about this cool town we live in (among other important things!)
• Snap a photo of you sipping one of the competing cocktails and you could win as well! Just share on social media with #smithsbarroomchallenge 
• This is meant to be a self guided tour (drink at your own pace!) but there will also be a weekly social night hosted by the Sanford Historical Society (see details below). During the social you get to mix and mingle with other cocktail and history enthusiasts and you get to tour select competing locations as you try their drinks (Socials are listed below and as always on our calendar!)
• Patron Choice Winner will be announced on April 30th during the 5th Social Night. All other winners will be announced in May.

What: The 11th Annual Sanford Community Sunrise Worship Service sponsored by Taylor Commandery No. 28 Knights Templar of Florida will be held on Easter Sunday morning at Fort Mellon Park in downtown Sanford. This is an open-air lake-side ecumenical worship service in the park to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This year the message will be delivered by the Reverend Sir Knight Donald Needham. Limited seating will be provided. It is recommended that you bring lawn chairs or a blanket. The wearing of jackets is advisable because there is often a breeze coming from the lake. Children are welcome to attend with their parents.

2022 LOVE YOUR SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL

What: The Love Your Shorts Film Festival brings the best of cinematic short films to Sanford!

The Love Your Shorts Film Festival is a film festival held in Sanford, Florida, around Valentine’s Day. The Festival screens only short films under 30 minutes in length. Films are divided into different blocks for screening.

Audience members at each block vote for their favorite film and winners are announced on the spot. The winning films from each block advance to a final block for a panel of judges to pick the overall festival winner. Winners of each block earn the festival’s award, the “Monroe,” an original piece of metal artwork named after Sanford’s Lake Monroe.

At the end of each block a brief Q&A session is conducted between the filmmakers and audience members. The Festival hosts an hour-long moderated filmmakers panel in which movie techniques and filmmaker triumphs and tribulations are discussed.

We provide all the materials and instruct you step-by-step to create a beautiful piece for your home or for a gift. Choose from a variety of paint and wood stain colors in the workshop. The regular cost for this adult workshop is $68, but for this night there is a 2 for $100 special, and pre-registration is required. Heavenly Love: Love Stories of the Night Sky

When: February 11th @7pm-9pm

Where: Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Planetarium, 100 Weldon Blvd., B

What: Celebrate Valentine’s Day by learning some of the many love stories told in the tapestry of the night sky. Discover the Korean myth about the stars Vega and Altair and their separation on either side of the Milky Way river. Experience the romance between Orion the Hunter and Artemis, the goddess of the moon, and discover how this love story tragically ends. Travel to the depths of the underworld in the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Find out how the constellation Aquarius was placed in the sky. Finally, enjoy the classic Native American tale of Algon the Hunter and the lost star maidens of the Pleiades.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to showtime. Seating is first come, first served and no reservations needed for the planetarium show. Cash or check only accepted as payment.

A telescope will be provided courtesy of the Central Florida Astronomical (weather permitting) for stargazing after each show weather permitting.

This show is recommended for ages 9 and up.
