Ever wanted to be an expat for an NGO? Tammy On The Move answers our questions about how she got her job, and living in Cambodia.

1. Tell us about how long you’ve been in Cambodia and what you do there?

I have been in Cambodia for 1.5 years now. My hubby and I initially went for a 6-month voluntary placement, but loved it so much that when we got offered a paid job in international development we jumped at the chance. We are both working for an American NGO that deals with human rights issues.

Would you be able to say a bit more about how you went from volunteer to paid work?

I went from volunteer to paid work by working quite hard actually. A lot of volunteers take the mickey to be honest and think that volunteering is a ride in he park and cant be bothered to do any work that isnt glamourous. Reality is that not a lot of work you get as a volunteer is glamorous and why should it? You are there do help where help is most needed at the time and if that is proofreading a local colleagues’ email then thats what you will have to do. So I worked hard, did work I didnt like doing and proofed that I can do a good job at helping making the organization more efficient and trained up in comms and fundraising. I must have done something right, as I was asked to … Read the rest of this blog post

Tammy on the Move – Expat in Cambodia is a post from: 30Traveler.com Travel Blog If you are viewing this content on another website, please alert 30Traveler.

We asked Dalila Ercolani of Eating Italy Food Tours to write us a guest post about Rome for vegans.

OPS! CUCINA MEDITERRANEA

This restaurant is 100% vegetarian and almost entirely vegan. It offers an extensive buffet of vegetarian/vegan dishes, Mediterranean style. You can find anything from the soup of the day (pumpkin, legumes, cereals…), vegetarian meats, fresh salads, vegan cheeses, chickpea falafel, mushroom risotto rendered creamy with almond butter, pasta made with semolina flour, and soy nuggets. What’s more they offer an array of typical Italian desserts, all vegan friendly. You can try a little Amaretto Semifreddi (an ice cream-like dessert), apple crumble and vegan cakes. The staff is young and friendly; the place modern and stylish. Definitely worth seeing! Via Bergamo, 56. Open Monday 9:30am-3:30pm, Tuesday-Sunday 9:30am-11pm.
http://opsveg.com/

REWILD CRUELTY-FREE CLUB

Why choose vegan? Because vegan products require a much smaller fraction of land and fewer resources than those necessary to produce animal products. According to Rewild Cruelty-Free Club, the choice is simple: choose vegan. Visitors get the oppurtunity to eat and drink whatever they like without having to worry about ingredients or limited choices. They offer sandwiches and wraps with vegan cold cuts, sausages and veggies burgers. Main courses (lasagna, tagliatelle, ravioli, soups and rolls), and second courses (breaded cutlets, roasts, medalions etc..) are all made with a seitan, tempeh or tofu base. You can choose between bruschetta with vegetable/tofu/organic spreads, vegan cheeses, and even shakes and puddings with vegetable milk. You won’t feel like you’re missing out … Read the rest of this blog post

Rome for Vegans is a post from: 30Traveler.com Travel Blog If you are viewing this content on another website, please alert 30Traveler.

I’ve officially started my 6 month trip and will be real-time blogging it.

I’m staying at a hostel here in Hawaii before moving into the sublet I found on craigslist next week.

I’ve only been in Hawaii for 2 days and already I’ve made two trips to Wholefoods. I like to eat well on the road but I don’t like to cook while traveling.

I thought I’d share the types of healthy vegan meals I make.

General Tips for Cooking in Hostel Kitchens

They keys to hostel food preparation are to find solutions that

- do not need too many pots, bowls etc.

- don’t require ingredients that go stale quickly (e.g., full loaves of bread)

- don’t require a lot of chopping (who wants to do that on vacation!)

- don’t require a freezer – unless your hostel has one – my current hostel has two giant fridges but no freezer.

Always check if your hostel has a freezer before you go shopping. If you do have freezer access, frozen vegan burritos such as Amy’s brand are an awesome choice. It’s a good idea to also check how full the fridge is before you go shopping as things won’t keep cool properly if the fridge is super full and/or being opened extremely frequently.

I always pack with me

So that I cam pump up the flavor of things I buy, I always pack

- garlic powder (found in the spice section at the supermarket. It’s 100% garlic)
- a … Read the rest of this blog post

Eating Vegan Using Hostel Kitchens is a post from: 30Traveler.com Travel Blog If you are viewing this content on another website, please alert 30Traveler.

Non-vegans often have restaurants like Per Se or the French Laundry on their bucket list. This is my current vegan restaurant bucket list. I like to mix high and low budget travel styles and you’ll see that reflected in this list.

Vedge – Upscale vegan. – Philadelphia.

Our friend Kristin from Will Travel for Vegan Food declares Vedge Restaurant her all-time favorite vegan restaurant and she has visited almost very vegan restaurant in the US.

See our interview with Kristin for more recommendations.

Veggie Grill – It’s like the vegan version of In and Out Burger

Their vegan cheeseburger is so delicious, and they have a location right by LAX. See my review. I always make a stop here when I’m in LA.

Vertical Diner in Salt Lake City – Utah

I don’t automatically think great vegan food when I think SLC but check out this deliciousness.

The Departure Restaurant and Lounge – Portland

The Departure in Portland is upscale Asian with a vegan menu (not a vegan restaurant but they list their extensive vegan menu on their site). They also have vegan desserts that include PISTACHIO KULFI (vanilla kumquat, candied pistachio, cardamom), ASIAN PEAR, GINGER & CRANBERRY CRISP candied walnut ice cream, CHOCOLATE & CURRY PEANUT BAR (passion fruit caramel, puffed rice, mango sorbet), and SPICED COCONUT TAPIOCA (compressed pineapple, cilantro mandarin gastrique, coconut ice).

Chaa Creek – Belize

Chaa Creek is an upscale resort in Belize that also has a vegan-friendly restaurant that is open to the public.… Read the rest of this blog post

5 Vegan or Very Vegan-Friendly Restaurants for Your Vegan Restaurant Bucket List is a post from: 30Traveler.com Travel Blog If you are viewing this content on another website, please alert 30Traveler.

Due to financial and other considerations, a lot of people think in terms of travel or babies, rather than travel AND babies. So, why do I suddenly have a strong desire to get pregnant when I’m leaving on open-ended travels in less than a month?

For lesbian couples there is less of an automatic expectation of becoming parents so it would be even easier to let the clock run down on my fertility (I’m 32).

The reasons I’ve got babies on the brain

1. A 40 year old family friend who was living overseas just had to have an EXTREMELY late DNC because she found out her pregnancy (her first) was abnormal. The baby had a very deformed brain + lots of other deformities and wouldn’t have survived. Because she was living overseas she didn’t have the maternity care she would’ve normally had at home and therefore didn’t find out this news until she had her first scan very late in the pregnancy.

Of course Halle Berry is pregnant at 46 but the reality is that the later into my 30s I leave it, the less chance I have of getting pregnant and the more chance there is of abnormalities.

2. Kathryn and I have been spending about 4 months of each year traveling separately (not consecutive months). For example, Kathryn does medical volunteering in Cambodia and I would’ve lost too much income if I had accompanied her on those trips as well as doing the 3 months of a … Read the rest of this blog post

Wanderlust and Babies – The Lesbian Parenting Edition! is a post from: 30Traveler.com Travel Blog If you are viewing this content on another website, please alert 30Traveler.
