2BoomerBabes Radio Hour

2BoomerBabes Radio Hour is a continuing conversation about boomer issues. We’ll explore topics such as coping with our aging parents (and perhaps adult children living in our basements), romance in mid-life, health, and finance. The topics are endless. As part of the largest generation in history, we seek the vast audience of boomers who are traveling the same road, and facing the same adjustments at midlife.

Shyness is Now a Mental Illness, Germs, Camp Bow Wow, and Alternative Communal Living

In his new book Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness, Dr. Christopher Lane explores how ordinary shyness became a mental disorder, and the long-range consequences of the diagnosis. Dr. Lane is the author of five books and is a teaching professor at Northwestern University. He also writes a blog for Psychology Today and is a regular writer for The Huffington Post.

Joining us to talk about our germiest habits and the germiest places (sometimes even in our own homes!) is Leslie Reichert, a nationally recognized green home-keeping expert AKA "The Cleaning Coach". Leslie was recently featured in Spry Living Magazine and offered some terrific tips!

To cater to the guilt-ridden pet owner, day care for dogs is springing up all over the place! One of the more exclusive doggie day cares is Camp Bow Wow, which has 110 "camps" all over the country and Dacia Haines, Communications Director refers to their clients as "campers."

There are a growing number of boomer-age women who are turning to alternative living arrangements, with the goal of saving money and a renewed sense of connection and community. There are many variations on this idea, but all involve a communal living style where women, and sometimes men, live together, either in group homes or their own apartments or houses, and share resources, services AND mutual support. Marianne Kilkenny is a consultant and educator who works with groups and individuals looking for alternative communities as they age.

Doolittle Raiders, Dr. Q, "An Everlasting Meal," Alternative Communal Living

The brave men of the Doolittle Raiders were the airmen that bombed Japan; a mission that was the major turning point in WWII. We talk with Larry Kelley, organizer, coordinator, and flight leader for the largest public gathering of WWII bombers since the end of WWII- the 2012 Doolittle Raiders Reunion to be held this March at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

Alfredo Quinones was a teenager living in poverty in a small border town in Mexico. Seeking a better life for himself and his family, he jumped the border illegally, became a migrant worker, learned English, and somehow found his way to a community college, where a professor encouraged him to enroll at the University of California, Berkley. He went on to Harvard Medical School and is now Dr. Q a world-renowned neurosurgeon and Director of the Brain Tumor Program at Johns Hopkins.

Writer-turned-chef Tamar Adler belives cooking should be instinctive, simple, and economical, not to mention joyful. In her new book An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace, Tamar Adler encourages us to begin wherever we are, with whatever we have in the cupboard, and simply enjoy.

Why women give so much, Adult children returning home, The best of everything after 50, and Baby Boomers traveling.

Donna Britt is a Pulitzer-prize nominated former columnist for "The Washington Post." She wrote about race relations, popular trends, books and films for 16 years. Her ardent readers were used to her personal recollections, including an essay about her brother's death thirty years ago; her life's defining moment. In her new memoir "Brothers and Me," Donna Britt uses her upbringing in racially divided Gary, Indiana as a backdrop to explore the universal issues of gender and race and reflect on why women give so much to men, often at an enormous cost to themselves.

Adult kids, especially those with college educations, were supposed to find great jobs and be financially independent right out of the starting gate. That mind-set is rapidly changing - between record student loan debt, rising rents and a dismal job market, college graduates are returning home in record numbers. As difficult as it may be for adult children AND their parents, there are definite upsides to the situation. In her book, "Under One Roof Again," Psychologist Susan Newman explores these benefits and offers solid advice on dealing with the inevitable complications that arise when formerly parent-child relationships become adult-adult ones.

That BIG 5-0 birthday is just around the corner. What are we facing in our next half century? How do we counter or (embrace) our morphing bodies?
What's the best prescription for living a long healthy life? Are we financially fit for the years ahead?

Entering mid-life can be a bit scary, but help is on the way! Barbara Hannah Grufferman, author of "The Best of Everything after 50, The Experts' Guide to Style, Sex, Health, Money, and More" shares all.

We stumbled across an interesting couple who, at mid-life, decided to chuck it all and travel the world. In 2006, Doris and Jacob Gallan began a 5 year around-the-world-journey visiting all 7 continents, over 50 countries, and residing in three. They quit their corporate life, sold their home and all their belongings, and left the everyday work grind behind to begin their new life journey. This experience launched Doris' successful blog, Baby Boomers Traveling, and prompted her to write "The Boomers' Guide to Going Abroad." Doris joins us from...who knows where.
