For a series of photos surely embarked upon more for the shock value than the artistry, photographer Arne Svenson took pictures out his window into the luxury apartments across the street. He has titled this series “The Neighbors” and it features residents of the nearby condos living life quite ordinarily without any sense that they are being watched.

Svenson describes his project…

The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed; I carefully shoot from the shadows of my home into theirs. I am not unlike the birder, quietly waiting for hours, watching for the flutter of a hand or the movement of a curtain as an indication that there is life within.

Now that those photos are displayed in a NYC gallery, the neighbors have found out about his illicit photography and are — as you can imagine — indignant, to say the least.

But Svenson doesn’t care…

For my subjects there is no question of privacy; they are performing behind a transparent scrim on a stage of their own creation with the curtain raised high.

Residents of the building that Svenson peeps into are thinking of taking him to court, but the NY Post reports that privacy law experts say there might be a civil case against him, but not a criminal case since their faces are all obscured or hidden in the photos.

“Onement VI” from abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman sold on Tuesday at a Sotheby’s auction for 43.8 million dollars.

Newman overwhelms and seduces the viewer with the totality of its sensual, cascading washes of vibrant blue coexisting with Newman’s vertical “Sign” of the human presence, his iconic and revolutionary “zip.”

Newman painted this 8.5′ x 10′ masterpiece in 1953. Here he is with it in his studio in 1961…

During May (which is National Foster Care Month) a series of these photographs is on display at The Children’s Museum of Arts. The exhibit is in partnership with Heart Gallery NYC, where you can read more about the kids below and dozens more.

Of course, it shouldn’t matter what a child’s photo looks like, but there’s no denying that it does make a difference when it comes to finding them a home. Laurie Sherman Graff, Heart Gallery’s executive director says that about a third of the children who are featured in this photo series end up finding forever families…
