District Camp 09

Last weekend was the Goyt District Cub Camp. Although we only had three Cubs who could attend the camp, they did very well, and came Third in the camping competition on Saturday (out of nine). Sunday, saw one of the three, Harry, reach the final of the mized pack Rounders competition, losing narrowly, 23 to 21.

Gang Show

Tonight we are going to watch the Marple Scouts and Guides Gang Show at the Carver Theatre. The show is put on by Scouts, Guides and Leaders from all of the older Marple sections. This year, all our leaders are involved in the show in someway – either on stage, in the lighting box, or behind the scenes shifting scenery.

Tonight we ran three badges aimed at teaching the lads a little about science. In particular some practical demonstrations of the principles behind the volcanoes we build over the last month.

Joint Evening with the Brownies

Last Monday we were invaded by the local Brownies for a night of fun and games. Despite a few comments along the lines of “ugh I’m not touching a girl”, and “I’m not playing this with HIM” both packs played the games in the right spirit. We mixed up the teams – with the Cubs being outnumbered by the Brownies almost 2 to 1 in each team. The final points standings for the teams were:

District Swimming Gala

Last night was the Goyt District Swimming gala. Despite only having a team of 3 cubs, Bradshaw still managed to come 4th out of 9 packs, only 2 points behind fellow Marple pack, Arkwright, in third. The winners were another Marple pack, Derby.

Well done to our three swimmers. Adam acheived 2 first places, and a second place, whilst Ben and William both made two out of three finals in their individual events.

Due to a lack of swimmers, we weren’t able to retain the Andrew Bennett trophy for the 6-cub relay, but we teamed up with Arkwright and made a good showing, coming second.

September Cub / Six of the Month

Fire Station Visit

Many thanks to Andy and Stu at Marple Fire Station who gave us a Fire Safety Talk, and a tour round the Fire Engine this week. The talk was very interesting and informative, and the Cubs all had fun playing with the hoses!

Swimming Gala

What a Month!

So here we are at the end of September. Over the last three weeks we’ve been Scavenger Hunting in Barbyn’s Park (and found a Frog), Kite flying in the Memorial Park, and Chippy Tasting around Marple.

The results on the Chippy Taste Tests were as follows:

Marple Fish Bar – 11 1/2 points
Chui’s – 10 points
The Canton Chef – 10 points

As you can see there was no real concensus, with the winners Marple Fish Bar getting 0 points from Green six, but 5 out of 5 from Blue six.

Rob achieves his Chief Scout Silver Award

Just before we finished for summer, Rob Roberts was awarded his Chief Scout Silver Award. Thanks to Rob’s mum, Rob and Akela made the papers, the Stockport Express to be exact.

“A Marple Cub Scout has risen to his latest challenge and received the highest Cub award possible – the in 1st Marple Cubs pack to do so.

Robert Roberts has always looked up to Akela Alastair Rainsbury, who towers above the youngsters at 6ft 8ins, and is now on his way to the top having gained the Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

The 10-year-old youngster from Hawk Green gained the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award at Beavers and is already aiming for the Gold Award at Scouts.

Akela Alastair said “There is a tremendous amount of work involved and the award is a testament to Robert’s commitment and dedication. It is truly well deserved.”"

1st World Scout Jamboree

As the 21st World Scout Jamboree is heading to a close, I thought I’d share the photos I took when I went as a day visitor with Marple’s Explorers: 21st World Scout Jamboree

Look closely at the photos and you’ll see one of our Leaders (Jess) strutting her stuff on stage. She was lucky enough to be chosen to be one of the performers in the opening and closing ceremonies. They also put on a lunchtime show everyday for the Jamboree Day Visitors.

Summer Camp – Hesley Wood

The photos from Summer Camp are up on the site. We went to Hesley Wood campsite, near Sheffield. The theme of the camp was Cowboys and Indians. The lads who went did a variety of activities including canoing, archery and swimming (at Ponds Forge).

Mini Rafts

Self Extinguishing Fires

Mixed results last night – the aim of the game is to be the first to put your fire out by popping the balloon. The trick is not to build too big a fire, otherwise it won’t go out when the balloon pops.

Yellow team won, with red team a distant second. Both teams’ fires went out without the aid of the balloon. Yellow team abandoned their first fire and moved to a second location, but to no avail.

Maze Celebrates Scouts Centenary

A Devon farming family has unveiled a maze in a 10-acre field of maize to mark the 100th anniversary of the scouting movement.

Archery at the Clough

Last night all 16 Cubs braved the elements to take part in the archery sessions we had booked at Linnet Clough campsite. As the weather was so bad, we cancelled the wide game we had planned, and made use of Linnet’s excellent Bouldering Wall instead.

A fun, if rather wet, time was had by all. By far the best “Boulders” were James and Ben who scrambled round like they belonged up there, and won all the games we played between them.

Athlete Badge

As in previous years, the district is organising an opportunity for all Cubs to gain their Athlete and Athlete Plus badges. This is taking place next Tuesday, 3rd July. See Akela for more details.

UPDATE – Due to the torrential rain we have had over the last few days, the Athlete Badge has been postponed until the end of the month – more details to follow.

District Cub Camp 07

Although it rained, a lot, fun was had by all. And besides, the weather wasn’t nearly as bad as last year!

This year’s theme was Countries, and all the bases were themed around a particular country. They included Dutch Pancakes, and Indian assault course, building the tallest tower in Taiwan, and rugby in New Zealand.
