This Saturday started Sukkot (a Jewish holiday). Look it up or ask me if you guys are interested. I went to the monthly Heights Art Show yesterday and then to the Greek festival. I had a great time with my colleagues. This morning I ate potato and egg tacos.

So here we have smoking gun proof about how hypocritical Republican politicians are. Rep. Mark Foley, Republican from Florida, has resigned after it was made known that he was sending nasty, dirty, sexual text messages to a 16 year old boy who was working in Washington. He asked the boy what he was wearing and told him he wanted him to take off his clothes. Even more disturbing, Foley was the co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus and recently wrote legislation that cracks down on internet predators. HYPOCRITES!!!!!!! I hope this shows people how 2 faced the Republican leadership is. They are always opposed to gay rights and gay issues, and here is one of them, a closeted gay Republican, trying to exploit innocent children. COME ON PEOPLE, IF THIS DOESN'T MAKE you want to vote the Republicans out of office, I don't know what will.

Less than 11 hours later, four dozen others had offered heartfelt commentary on the news of Dale Lloyd's shocking death, with similar messages posted on his Facebook account.

Lloyd,a freshman defensive back at Rice University, died at 8:49 a.m. Monday at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Lloyd had collapsed during a light workout with his teammates early Sunday evening, and he died in the company of his family and the Rice coaching staff.

Lloyd, a two-sport standout and 2006 Lamar High graduate, was 19.

Rice officials are awaiting autopsy results. Lloyd played in one game with the Owls this season — against Houston on Sept. 2 — and returned with the team from a game at Florida State on Saturday without incident. An all-District 21-5A performer in football and baseball, he was one of 18 recruits who signed with first-year Rice football coach Todd Graham in February.

"The Rice Owl family has suffered a devastating loss," Graham said in a statement. "Dale was a tremendous person with the heart of a champion. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, our players and coaches, and the Rice family. We ask our fans to keep his family and our players, coaches and staff in their prayers."

Reports of Lloyd's death spread quickly around town and Rice's South Main campus. By late afternoon, students were weeping outside Lloyd's dorm, Lovett College. Rice officials spoke of plans for a memorial service honoring Lloyd, and those sentiments were echoed at Lamar High, where students and coaches were stunned by the news of his passing. Lloyd was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students and also volunteered with the Mayor's Youth Council.

"It's a tremendous shock," Lamar football coach Tom Nolen said. "Dale Lloyd was a great kid, a great student and a great player. He was a dream to coach. I wouldn't have any gray hairs if all the kids I had were like Dale."

Few details available
Because Rice team officials were not present at the news conference where information of Lloyd's death was released, details were sketchy. After collapsing Sunday, Lloyd was treated immediately by EMS, then transported to the Memorial Hermann emergency room via a Houston Fire Department ambulance. Lloyd was conscious when he was loaded into the ambulance, but his condition deteriorated through the night.

Lloyd is survived by his mother, Bridgette; his father, Dale R. Sr.; and two brothers.

A deadly trend
Several area athletes have died of heart-related ailments in recent years. Former Fort Bend Austin High linebacker Devaughn Darling, 18, collapsed and died in February 2001 of an apparent cardiac arrhythmia. His death came during a workout at Florida State. In June 2004, former Klein Forest defensive end McCollins Umeh, 18, died from an enlarged heart during a mid-afternoon voluntary workout at the University of Arizona on a 96-degree day in Tucson, Ariz.

On Sept. 18, junior varsity football player Christopher Pichon II of Booker T. Washington High died following a voluntary workout at the school. According to an assistant coach, Pichon complained of being thirsty, and when a trainer returned with water, the player had passed out on the track. Yet another tragic, sudden death was avoided Sept. 15 in College Station when doctors attending to Austin Westlake High offensive tackle Matt Nader used the team's automated external defibrillator (AED) to restart the 6-6, 300-pound Texas recruit's heart. Nader suffered a ventricular fibrillation after a 16-play drive on a near-90-degree night. Because Lloyd was conscious, a defibrillator would not have been necessary.

The National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research reports 26 cases of heatstroke death — mostly high school players — in the past 10 years, including four this year. That number (2.6 per year) is similar to on-the-field deaths — mostly brain injuries — suffered in the past three years (seven total, 2.3 per year).

With no clues as to Lloyd's death, Rice officials were left emotionally exposed, crushed by the loss of a student-athlete who had only recently begun a new phase of his life.

"Any time a student-athlete comes to Rice University, I feel, as I tell our coaches and recruits, we become their parents," said Rice athletic director Chris Del Conte, who was wrought with emotion. "This is a tremendous loss for all of us at Rice University."

Emotions running high
A perusal of Lloyd's MySpace page brought the significance of that loss home. Periodically, a new post from a Rice player appeared, each message providing an individual perspective of a relationship Lloyd had with his peers. Though the words were different, the information conveyed reflected what Talbert offered Monday morning.

"we miss u here homie," Talbert wrote.

"God got a lil jealous, he has a plan for us all, im jus sorry to see that yo life had to end so early

"from me and the rest of our squad, we love u and miss u D. Lloyd."

Chronicle staffers John McCloskey, Gerald James and Sam Khan Jr. contributed to this report.

I prefer foreign films, indie movies, etc., but occasionally there are big Hollywood blockbusters that are great. I just watched Slingblade for the first time. It was a great movie. I don't like Billy Bob Thorton, but I give him credit for his great performance in this film. The relationship he forges with Frankie is priceless. And if I hated potted meat, grease, and mustard before watching this movie, my feelings have hardened exponentially!

Karl: [Eating potted meat] I reckon it tastes alright.
Frank: You really think it's got peckers in there?
Karl: You know better than that.
