A few weeks back I was watching an episode of What's in The Bag on the Golf Channel that gave viewers an inside look at what goes in TaylorMade's Tour Van during a typical week on the PGA Tour. I'm generally fascinated by clubmaking so I really like seeing how Tour players have their clubs adjusted and customized - but strangely enough the most intriguing thing from the episode was this belt buckle that TaylorMade staffer John Mallinger was wearing (see above).

The whole Anthony Kim / Bubba Watson diamond-crusted belt buckle thing is a little much for me, but Mallinger's was really different. At first I thought the "M" was probably just for Mallinger - sort of like Hunter Mahan's "H" belt, but after quick Google search I found out that Mallinger along with fellow Tour member Peter Tomasulo are part owners of a clothing line called travis Mathew - designed and founded by their longtime friend and touring pro, Travis Johnson. As fir Mallinger's "M" belt buckle, upon closer inspection, is really a "t" and an "M" for travis Mathew (check out the logo on the homepage). Of course, I ended up buying the belt and a pair of shorts and a shirt to go with it.

The line can really be described as more lifestyle wear and accessories than stritctly golf apparel. The fabrics have the quality feel and performance of a Hugo Boss but have a fun, almost retro vibe like Original Penguin or Pickering. The colors in the line are fairly traditional - lots of whites, blacks, grays, greens and light blues but the patterns are what really set the line apart. My favorite is the "I-Drop" which has this cool chalk-stripe horizontal argyle pattern across the chest. In fact, if you caught any of THE PLAYERS yesterday - it's the same shirt that Mallinger was wearing en route to posting a final round two-under 70 to finish T-3 in the Tour's "5th Major". The bold stripes in the "I-Brash" and "I-Line" are very sharp without that look-at-me feel that some other fashion-forward golf brands have.

There's also a lot of functional design in the brand. Their shorts (and pants) feature a patented "iPocket" for iPods - which is located in the center of the back of the shorts under the waistband and a Velcro "Glove-Stay" that allows gloves to dry out between shots. The iPocket is great and really keeps the iPod from getting in the way during practice sessions and though it's not quite hot enough here to put the Glove-Stay to the test it will be shortly and I'm sure it'll come in handy.

I expect to see big things from travis Mathew Apparel in the coming year - building on the success that their staff memebers have had on the PGA Tour. The line is a great blend of performance, style and personality that's works on the course, in the office or at the bar - which I think is really important to consumers right now because you geat a lot of wears for your dollar in this tight economy. You can get your own travis Mathew apparel through their webstore but keep your eyes peeled for here at 14 STIX as well...

Here are some more pics from the travis Mathew lineup.

Do you have a hard time adjusting to life away from the golf course?
Do you dress like likes-to-golf-guy wherever you go (please tell us you
don't go jogging in collared shirts)? Do you bore guests at dinner
parties and backyard BBQ's with the blow-by-blow from your morning
four-ball? Trust us, no one cares about the bad bounce that led to the
double bogey on number 7 - not even your best friend and certainly not
female party-goers. But you know what is a great conversation piece at
parties, bars, football games, clubs and bowling alleys? Yes, mullets,
but that's not what exactly what we had in mind. Actually, a cool
t-shirt is a guaranteed conversation starter. You could spend $30 on
one like this
and look like a total d-bag or you could just rep your favorite
deal-a-day golf website with one of these logo'd tee's and be armed
with something to talk to the girl next door about.

It's about this time each year that I start to get the golf bug again and typically one of the first things I do to start the season is re-grip my clubs. I usually go with the standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet (logo down, 1 wrap of tape under the left hand, 2 wraps under the right...if you're curious), but after installing some Golf Pride New Decades on my dad's set I thought I might try something different this year. So, today when I was looking around for new grip technology I stumbled across a press release on The Golf Wire that mentioned that PGA Tour member Matt Jones had signed a deal with Scottsdale, AZ based grip company Pure Grips.

I hadn't heard of Pure Grips before so I checked out their site. As you might expect from a small company, their product lineup is limited but still provides enough options to cover a variety of preferences in terms of feel and performance. The lineup features three wrap-style grips ranging from soft to medium firmness and one firm pro-style that would be similar to the Golf Pride Tour Velvet.

There are two things that really set Pure Grips apart from it's competitors: construction and installation. Pure Grips uses an innovative injection molding process and a proprietary EPDM
(not to be confused with Erick and Parrish Makin' Dollars) rubber containing no plasticizers or other diluting additives. In non-technical terms, the process and EPDM rubber create grips that are highly durable and incredibly tacky. According to the company, the technology also allows "clubs maintain more balance
and shots are more consistent because our grips provide equal
thickness, no parting lines and the most unvarying weight of any grip
on the market." In fact, they're so confident in the all-weather durability of their product that they guarantee all of their grips to stay tacky and perform like new for 12 months - and if they don't, they'll replace them for you. How cool is that? Almost as cool as the fact that Pure Grips can be installed with or without tape in 1/4 of the time it takes to install a conventional grip thanks to their proprietary 'tapeless' installation process (be sure to check out the video). Again, sounds like a challenge. I like that the grips can be installed with tape as well because I like build up the thickness under the right hand so the grip is uniform in thickness from end to end - allowing for consistent feel whether I'm hitting full shots, knock-downs or pitches and chips. Normally, it takes me a good hour to hour and a half to a proper re-gripping of 13 clubs, not including the cleanup of all the mess from tape and spilled solvent, so being able to throw on new grips in 15-20 minutes without all of the hassle of cutting tape and soaking everything in solvent sounds pretty good.

At this point, I feel compelled to take the Pure Grip challenge and see for myself if they're really that easy to install and if they're as durable as they claim. Hey, they're confident enough to guarantee their goods, so what do I have to lose?

If you're interested in Pure Grips you can buy them on right off their site.

Already got Pure Grips on your set? Let us know how they're working for you by dropping a comment below.

Pure Soft Wrap

Pure Smooth Wrap

Pure Wrap

Pure Midsize Wrap

Pure Pro

A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich (FF to :23 sec mark) is a meal. A Sandwick is a half-zip windshirt which is nothing like a sandwich, Manwich or a meal. It's a short-sleeve pullover (not a cardigan, but thanks for noticing - killer boots man) with a lightweight, stretch lining to keep you warm - not like an extra pair of gloves, but warm enough for a few hours on the links. It's also 100% water repellent and highly breathable which makes it a great for misty, overcast fall rounds. So, is a Sandwick a quick and tasty way satisfy you and your family's dinnertime appetite? No, but it does come in 4 different colors and at this price you should have enough cash left over to buy a month's worth of Manwiches for the youngins.
When Nickent Golf hired John Hoeflich to become their Senior Vice President of Product Development - it was considered by many as big win for the company best known for it's tour-quality hybrids. Hoeflich's design credits include the Tommy Armour 845's, Titleist DCI's (the originals) and more recently the TaylorMade rac irons and wedges. All very successful designs in their own right.

Hoeflich's first effort for Nickent is the 3DX Pro. Now, we know what your thinking - 'Pro' means 'not for me'. This couldn't be farther from the truth. The 3DX Pro's are targeted for mid-handicappers that prefer a more traditional looking setup - i.e. thin top line, less offset and narrower sole - but still need the forgiveness of a game-improvement iron. The Pro's also feature a tungsten-polymer XW insert that helps dampen vibrations, reduces shock and produces a muscle-back forged feel. The insert also allows weight to be redistributed lower on the clubhead which helps produce a higher ball flight that is especially useful when faced with thick lies in the rough. Hoeflich also adjusted the lofts slightly stronger than standard so the higher launch resulting from the XW insert has a boring trajectory - making shot control extremely effective in all playing conditions.

The X-Factor is what Peter Kostis calls the key to producing serious Tour-pro distance in the golf swing. Essentially, the X-Factor is achieved by rotating the hips as fast as possible on the downswing while keeping the shoulders turned back, allowing for a shallower angle of attack on an 'inside' path. Tour-bombers like Sean O'Hair, Sergio, DL III all max out their X-Factor. See what we mean here.

What these guys do better than the average player is generate more separation between their shoulders and hips at
the start of the downswing. The farther they stretch the X the faster they're able to
uncoil at impact. Faster uncoiling means more clubhead speed and more clubhead speed means more distance.

Chances are you're not as flexible as Serg or Sean and you're more likely to slip a disc than stretch your X-Factor. That's ok, you're not alone. We've got an easier way for you to increase your X-Factor - Tehama's X-Factor Jacquard Polo. It's 100% polyester fabric is made from coconut shells which gives this shirt exceptional moisture-wicking, odor fighting and UPF protecting abilities. The shirt's subtle 'X' pattern has 'long-ball hitter' written all over it (well, not literally, but you get the idea).

The Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 Tournament Edition Rangefinder is the absolute premier digital laser rangefinder on the market. In fact, over 90% of professional players and caddies use the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 - making it the #1 rangefinder on all professional golf tours worldwide.

Accurate yardage is critically important to hitting precise shots. The best players and caddies in the world use the Pinseeker 1500 during practice rounds to create detailed tournament yardage books - mapping out distances to course landmarks, hazards, optimal landing areas and pin point lay-up positions. Do you really think they're going to trust yardages Superintendent Sandy McFiddish stamped on sprinkler heads 10 years ago? Not when a paycheck depends on it. And how often are you actually in the dead center of the fairway where most of those sprinklers are located...? That's what we thought. The Pinseeker 1500 allows you to get accurate distance measurements to flags, trees, bunker faces, beer cart girls and water hazards.

Check out our blog for more detailed information on how these rangefinders work.

Tournament Edition: The Tournament Edition measures distances only, which under USGA rule 14-3b can be used during tournament play provided that the tournament committee approves a local rule allowing for their use. Most state and city golf associations adopt this local rule during their tournaments. The device is also legal for the posting of scores for handicap purposes. If you play in city, state, regional or even country club tournaments then the Tournament Edition is for you.
Does your golf wardrobe suffer from a severe lack of personality? When you head to the course do you look like you've stepped right out of a Dockers ad? We're friends, right? Let us break this to you as nicely as we can... Triple pleated khaki shorts are not cool and by wearing them you're just furthering the golf is lame stereotype. Why not break out of the mold and have a little fun with your Sunday getup? Pahr's All-Time shorts have fun written all over them (well, not literally) and they happen to be as comfortable as they are cool. They feature an 11 inch inseam (just to or slightly below the knee) so you won't look like you're wearing Daisy Dukes and the distinctive plaid pattern looks tight whether you're knocking down flagsticks or knocking back a few cold ones with your friends at the pub.
Despite how it may sound, argyle is not for pirates. Technically, that would be arrrrgyle. The design team at Sunice probably didn't have pirates in mind specifically when they drew up the Nairn Argyle Windstopper Jacket - more likely just golfers. Although, One-Eyed Willie, Redbeard, Black Bart and Captain Kidd probably would have appreciated a frock with WINDSTOPPER technology. Back then WINDSTOPPER technology basically amounted to downing a barrel of spiced rum (please drink responsibly, kids). Unfortunately for golfers, barrels of rum are not practical to carry in your bag and for most of us there is an inverse relationship between the amount of rum consumed and the quality of play (unless you're this guy). So, when the cold fall winds blow across the links you might find yourself saying "shiver me timbers" (or maybe just "damn it's cold") if you don't have the right gear.

You don't have to be Chester Copperpot or Mikey Walsh to find the solution and you won't have to worry about the Fratellis either. Sunice's Nairn jacket is 100% Merino wool on the outside for softness and warmth and is lined with WINDSTOPPER (tm) fabric to cut fall and winter winds but is breathable up to 10,000 MVT so you won't have to bail out buckets of sweat.

If you play golf long enough you're bound to see some weird and amazing things happen. Strange bounces are just part of the game - both good and bad (FF 0:52 mark). Sometimes a wayward tee shot caroms off an overhanging limb and ends up in the middle of the fairway. Other times a perfectly struck shot lands on a sprinkler head and bounds into a fairway bunker. It's a game that's often twice as maddening as it is rewarding. Perhaps it's that paucity of positive results that keeps most of us coming back. The good, no matter how infrequently it shows up, far outweighs the bad. After all, golf is really just a game of numbers. Like we said, play enough and the bounces will go your way - eventually. Maybe.

The Sunice Carrum pullover is the perfect soft shell to help you get in a couple of extra rounds in the off season. It's 100% polyester Wx-TECH shell is unlined, ultra-lightweight and stretchy so you won't feel like this. It's also water resistant up to 5,000mm so it's great for light rain...or snow, if you like golf that much. The fabric has a great luster to it that makes the Amazon and Moss versions pop and the Black version shine. Wear it over a thermal and a golf shirt and you're set for fall, winter and spring golf.

Patrick Henry said it best, "Give me Liberton, or give me death!" Yes, this call to battle is most famously credited with persuading the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution to send the Virginia troops into the Revolutionary War. In fact, upon hearing Henry's plea those in attendance were so moved they were said to have shouted "To arms! To arms!" in support of the entrance into the war. Puzzled, Mr. Henry replied, "Yes! Two arms! Two arms! The Liberton has room for two arms!" But the crowd had been stirred into such a frenzy by what they had thought was a call to arms (not arms) that they did not hear what Henry had said following. He waived his arms above his head and shouted, "No, no, no. I'm talking about the Sunice Liberton pullover! It has GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER technology, is lightweight, stretchy and is really water resistant. I think it would be the perfect frock to keep our men warm and dry as they fight for liberty and peace! Gentlemen. GENTLEMEN! Heed my words, give our troops the Liberton or give them death - as they will surely freeze without it!

The rest, as they say, is history. Virginia sent it's troops into the war (without the LIberton pullover, to Henry's dismay) and played an integral role in beating those tea-drinking, biscuit-eating limey SOB's back across the pond.

Sometimes Sergio Garcia gives us the impression that he enjoys dressing like a golf-dork (HAT TIP to our friends at Chapeau Noir) Often times, El Nino has more stripes running up and down his frame than two day old roadkill on I-70. Personally, we think it's Sergio who is masterminding these crimes against good golf fashion so don't place the blame directly on Adidas's shoulders. Maybe they should have some sort of intervention with him, or maybe they should adopt some sort of Garanimal-type system for him so he knows what looks good with what. If that doesn't work then they might just have to lay his clothes out on his bed in the morning before each round like mom used to do. Oh wait, looks like they already have.

Though you wouldn't know it necessarily from looking at Sergio, Adidas actually makes some great looking apparel. Take the Formotion Colorblock Polo, for example. It's engineered and shaped around the body to deliver 100% freedom during the motion of the golf swing. That means your flying right elbow should have plenty of room to flap it's wings. A reconfigured shoulder shape forms a wrap-around construction that moves with the rotation of the upper body so your free to max out your X-Factor, like Jamie Sadlowski. Even the seems on this shirt received special attention. They were designed to mirror muscle contours to eliminate restriction and irritation, so something embarrassing like this doesn't happen mid-round. Ouch.

Final Score

If Mom still dresses you the Formotion Colorblock Polo is not for you. You're probably better suited for something like this.

Our mission here at 14 STIX is to be your mainline to limitless
deals on golf equipment, apparel, and accessories - but, as we say,
we're more than just some online store peddling golf gear. We're a
community that's devoted to the game of golf; preserving its history
and traditions and fostering growth for its future. We're actively
involved in organizations committed to the same goal (and we encourage
you to do the same).

One of the organizations that we support is the The First Tee,
which is a junior golf initiative of the World Golf Foundation and is
supported by all major US golf organizations (PGA, PGA Tour, LPGA Tour,
USGA and Augusta National Golf Club). With over 200 chapters across the
US and five in foreign countries The First Tee has enriched the lives
of over 1.5 million young people in just nine years through the National Schools Program and The Life Skills Experience.

The First Tee
is dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an
opportunity to develop, through golf and character education,
life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. The
program is designed so that kids have fun while learning how to play by
the rules of golf - but also goes one step further by teaching a life
skills curriculum to help the kids develop not just on the golf course,
but in the classroom, in social setting and as member of society. These
programs have had tremendous impact on the lives of participants.
Almost 75% of parents of The First Tee children noticed an increase
their child's confidence, positive changes in communication skills and
responsibility, 66% saw an increase in social skills and 52% noted
improved grades. Those are astounding numbers.

On May 9th, 2009 the Kansas City Chapter of The First Tee
is putting on The Kansas City Junior Golf Festival. The event is going
to feature instructional clinics from Kansas City's own Tom Watson,
games for kids and parents to play together, an informational session
on playing golf in college and applying to colleges, and (this is where
I come in) a fundraising 100 hole golf marathon. Yup, myself and 26
other volunteers are going to play 100 holes of golf each to raise a
minimum of $1,000 in pledges per player.

Here's the deal. I
need your support. Now, I know you're probably thinking, "This guy
wants me to spend money on his website AND donate money so that he can
spend the afternoon playing golf?" Listen, I'd rather you not spend a
single cent on this site for a month if it meant you'd be willing to
pledge a few dollars to help improve the lives of these kids. It means
that much to me.

If you think you'd be willing to help there are two ways to donate - online or by sending me an email.

ONLINE - If you'd like to donate online you can do so here.
In the designation box [THIS IS IMPORTANT] please make sure you type
"KC Jr. Golf Festival - Doug Albers" - otherwise the funds won't be
attributed to our event.

VIA EMAIL - You can also email me through the Contact Us section on our site. I will send you a pledge form that you can fill out and mail, email or fax in.

You can make a pledge of any dollar amount per hole played (make it a
$0.01/per hole if that's all you an afford to give) OR a single gift in
the dollar amount of your choosing. And, yes, your donation is tax
deductible. The First Tee of Greater Kansas City's legal name is the
Junior Golf Foundation of Greater Kansas City, a Missouri
Not-for-Profit Corporation. The Federal Tax ID# is 43-1532215.

This is the most important part. If we as a group do not raise $10,000
dollars by April 15, 2009 - we will have to CANCEL the event, which
means a lot of disappointed kids and parents. Please help us give back
to the game that has given us so much!

If you have any
questions at all about the First Tee or the Kansas City Junior Golf
Festival you can email me or contact Pat Zuk, the Chapter's Executive
Director. You can email pat at pzuk@thefirstteekc.org.

<o ></o>

The patent is USPN D588658 titled “Golf Putter With Slotted Head.”

I've been intrigued by DeLaCruz's designs for a while and though I'm normally a fan of cavity backs I'd have to agree with Dave that the blade versions are more visually appealing. The B-4 model would be my pick of the lot. What about you?

[Golf-Patents]

Critics who say golfers aren't real athletes - prepare to be silenced once and for all. Tom Lehman and Bernhard Langer (again with the awful Rugby shirt, Bernie?) teamed up for a (thrilling?) victory in the Champions Tour Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf event last weekend. On the first hole of a sudden death playoff against the team of Jeff Sluman and Craig "The Walrus" Stadler (another couple of physical specimans) - Langer ran in a 45 footer for birdie that prompted this great moment in awkward white guy history. Looks like Tom and Bernie might have taken a page right out of the Tiger/Stevie Williams Awkward Celebration Playbook. However, the Cialis-sponsored celebration was a little, umm, premature. Stadler ran his birdie putt in right on top of Langers forcing a second playoff hole. Not to worry though, a second Lehman/Langer embrace was not to be denied after Jeff Sluman missed a four-footer for par to extend the playoff. The foursome was a combined -54 thru 54 holes yet only Lehman could manage to muster up a par on the final playoff hole. Must have been his youthful athleticism. The win made Lehman the 13th player in Champions Tour history to win in his debut event.
