This morning I woke up with an unusual luxury.
Time.

Alifya was on an all-girls holiday with a few close friends, and the house felt wonderfully… and strangely… quiet.

Like most people who temporarily find themselves alone, I immediately made a list of all the things I was going to enjoy.

Watch whatever I wanted.
Order food without negotiating.
Leave the lights on.
Occupy the entire sofa.

It turns out those things are entertaining for about forty-five minutes.
After that, I found myself opening an old photo album from one of our holidays together.

That led me to a question I couldn’t answer.
What actually happens on an all-girls holiday?
Not the Instagram version.
The real version.

Do conversations become different when there are no partners around? Do old school stories come back to life? Do they laugh harder? Stay up later? Talk about dreams they’ve quietly shelved? Or do they simply enjoy not being responsible to anyone for a day or two?

Anthropologists have long observed that nearly every culture has created spaces where people gather only with those who share similar life experiences. Men’s circles. Women’s circles. Family reunions. Pilgrimages. Book clubs. Fishing trips.

Perhaps humans have always understood something that many of us forget.

Sometimes we leave the people we love… to return to them a little lighter.

A holiday isn’t always an escape from life.
Sometimes it’s a gentle return to another version of yourself—the one your oldest friends still remember.

The version that laughs at stories nobody else understands.
The version that existed long before job titles, mortgages and calendars filled with obligations.

As I sat looking through those photographs, I realised something.
Every memorable holiday I’ve ever had has one thing in common.

I don’t remember the hotel.
I barely remember the itinerary.
I remember who made me laugh until my stomach hurt.

Perhaps that’s what we’re really collecting when we travel.
Not destinations.
People.
And the stories we continue telling because they were there with us.

So I have a question for you.

Why do you think women love all-girls holidays so much?

Ladies, what do those weekends give you that everyday life sometimes doesn’t?
And gentlemen, what do you imagine happens on those mysterious trips you’ve never quite been invited to?
I’m looking forward to reading every perspective.

Until tomorrow,

I woke up smiling today.

Yesterday was my Aunt Helen’s 50th birthday. The family gathered, as families do, around good food, old memories, and the kind of conversations that only happen when nobody is looking at the clock.

At one point someone suggested a party game.
“Let’s each spend a minute saying something about Helen.”

The first few speeches were lovely. Kind. Predictable.
Then Andrew stood up.

For the next five minutes he had us laughing so hard that people were wiping away tears.

He praised Helen.
He teased her.
He described imaginary vacations they’d supposedly taken together.
He invented stories about her morning routine, her conversations with strangers, the way she ordered food in restaurants, even the dramatic expression she wore whenever dessert arrived.

Almost none of it had actually happened.
Nobody cared.
Because every sentence somehow revealed something true about Helen.

When he finally sat down, nobody wanted to go next. Not because they didn’t love Helen, but because Andrew had reminded us that storytelling isn’t about perfect facts.
It’s about making people feel something.

Humans have always gathered around storytellers.

Long before books, films, television, or the internet, families passed down their history through people who could make everyone laugh, cry, or sit in complete silence. Storytellers preserved memories long before anyone thought of writing them down.

Every family seems to have one.

The uncle who can make a trip to the grocery store sound like an epic adventure.
The grandmother who has told the same childhood story fifty times and somehow everyone still listens.
The cousin who turns every ordinary mishap into a comedy.

They’re doing something quietly important.
They’re reminding us who we are.

Years later, we often forget the exact details of birthdays, holidays or family dinners.
But we never forget the person who made everyone laugh.

Perhaps stories are one of the oldest ways humans say, “We belong to one another.”

As I thought about Andrew today, I realized something.
Every family has a keeper of stories.
And every family is richer because of them.

So today, I’m curious…

Who is the storyteller in your family?

Tell us who they are, and if there’s one story, one joke, or one unforgettable line they always tell, share it in the comments.
You never know.
Someone else’s family story might become the smile another reader carries through today.

Until tomorrow,

This morning, I wasn’t rushing anywhere.
I’d taken the day off to help a friend move into his new home later this afternoon. With nowhere urgent to be, I found myself enjoying something that has become surprisingly rare, a slow morning.

As I sat with my coffee, a thought quietly appeared.

My friend isn’t moving because of luck alone. Years ago, an elderly neighbour noticed his potential, introduced him to the right people, encouraged him when he doubted himself, and opened a door that eventually led him here.

It made me wonder how often our lives change because someone else saw something in us before we did.

History is filled with moments like this.
Warren Buffett still credits Benjamin Graham’s teachings for shaping the way he thinks.
Behind many remarkable lives stands someone whose name rarely makes the headlines.

Perhaps that’s true for ordinary lives too.

As I looked back on my own, several faces drifted through my mind. Teachers. Friends. Colleagues. Family.
Then one face remained.
A professor during my junior year.

She never told me what my future should be. She simply asked better questions than anyone else. Those conversations quietly expanded what I believed was possible, and many of the decisions that shaped my life can be traced back to those afternoons.

It left me wondering about something I still don’t know the answer to.

Do the right people appear because we’re finally ready to hear them… or do their words make us ready?

Perhaps it’s a little of both.
Either way, none of us arrives where we are entirely on our own.

Does anyone come to mind, maybe someone who said one sentence or offered one piece of advice that quietly changed the direction of your life?

Maybe now is a good time for you to tell them.
No grand gesture is required.

Perhaps a quiet thank you.
A phone call.
A short message.
Or simply letting them know that something they once said still lives inside you.

Sometimes the greatest compliment we can give another human being is this:

“You changed my life, and I am grateful for it.”

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Good morning.

A few evenings ago I found myself at a dinner with a group of entrepreneurs.

Eight of us sat around a large round table. The meal was wonderful, the conversation even better. As dessert disappeared and coffee arrived, someone asked a question that instantly silenced the table.

He looked across at a gentleman in his seventies and asked,

“When is enough… enough?”

Not enough money for this month’s bills.
Not enough for retirement.
Enough.

The question was really asking something much deeper.
When do you stop chasing?

The older gentleman didn’t hesitate.
“Never,” he smiled.
Then he explained.

“When you finally understand your craft better than almost anyone else, don’t stop. Instead, hire people to run the business. Let your money begin working harder than you do. Keep building, but build differently. That gives you the freedom to enjoy life while your experience continues creating value.”

It was a thoughtful answer.
But as I drove home, another thought kept following me.
Perhaps there isn’t one correct answer.

History is full of people who never stopped creating. Michelangelo was designing architecture in his late eighties. Benjamin Franklin helped shape a nation well into old age. Warren Buffett still enjoys going to work every morning.

History is also full of people who deliberately stepped away, not because they had to, but because they had already discovered what mattered most.

Neither group was wrong.
Because the real question was never about money.

Money is one of humanity’s greatest inventions. It buys security. It creates opportunity. It gives us choices our grandparents could only dream about.

But money has one limitation.
It never tells you when you have enough.
Only you can do that.

Some people reach that point at forty.
Some never reach it at ninety.
The number isn’t what’s important.
The awareness is.

Because if we never stop to decide what “enough” means, life quietly keeps moving the finish line further away.

Perhaps the wealthiest people aren’t always those who have accumulated the most.
Perhaps they’re the ones who know what they’re no longer willing to sacrifice.

Time.
Health.
An afternoon with grandchildren.
A long conversation with an old friend.

Those things rarely appear on a balance sheet.
Yet years later, they are often what we remember most.

If today’s thoughts reminded you of someone who seems to have figured out their own version of “enough,” perhaps that’s worth noticing. Their answer may not become yours, but it might start an interesting conversation.
And conversations like these have a curious way of revealing what we truly value.

Have you ever reflected on what part of your life you’re still trying to make bigger, even though it may already be enough?

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Good morning.

This morning I’m thinking about something that has probably happened to every one of us.

A few days ago, I asked a friend at work for help. It was an area he knew far better than I did, so asking him felt natural.

His response caught me completely off guard.
He snapped.
He said I was taking him for granted. That I couldn’t expect him to be at my beck and call.

I remember standing there wondering what just happened.
I replayed it in my head for days.

Did I miss something?
Had I unknowingly crossed a line?
Or had I simply become the nearest target for a frustration that had nothing to do with me?

Then I discovered something.
Around the same time, he had made a significant mistake at work. Management had come down hard on him. Suddenly, his reaction made more sense.

Not because it was fair.
But because hurt people sometimes hurt people.

That realization didn’t erase the sting.
It simply changed the story I was telling myself.

Most disagreements aren’t really about the words that were spoken.
They’re about the invisible battles neither person can see.

A delayed reply. A harsh tone.
How often do we assume they’re about us…
…when they may simply be evidence that someone else is carrying more than we know?

That doesn’t excuse unkindness.
But it sometimes explains it.
And explanation creates something pride never can:
Choice.

Every disagreement quietly asks us a question.

“What matters more to you right now… being right, or preserving something valuable?”

Sometimes the answer is distance.
Sometimes it’s forgiveness.
Most of the time, it’s simply waiting until both people have stopped fighting battles the other cannot see.

I’ve not yet decided what I’ll do.
Perhaps I’ll call him.
Perhaps I’ll wait.
Perhaps he’ll call me first.

Either way, I’d rather lose an argument than lose someone who once mattered.

Relationships rarely end because of one difficult conversation.
They end because pride quietly volunteers to become their spokesperson.

If someone came to your mind while you were reading this, a person you have not spoken to since something they once said, maybe that is worth noticing. You do not have to do anything about it today. Noticing is already a kind of love.

So here is what I am carrying with me, and I would very much like to hear your answer:
What’s one friendship you almost lost because neither of you wanted to take the first step and if you had today, would you make a different choice?
Tell me. I read everything.

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Have you ever met an old friend after several months and quietly thought,
“they are not quite the same person anymore.”

A few days ago I met my friend Steve for coffee before he left on a long work assignment in Europe.
Steve has always been gentle, thoughtful, almost reserved. The sort of person who never needed to be the loudest voice in the room.

But this time something was different.
His eyes seemed brighter.
He spoke excitedly about hiking with strangers in the Alps, learning new languages, getting lost in unfamiliar streets.

Walking back, I found myself smiling.
Steve had changed and I was so happy for him.

Every conversation we have…
Every disappointment…
Every celebration…
Every person we love…
They leave tiny fingerprints on who we become.

Perhaps expecting our friends never to change is like expecting rivers never to flow.

The friendship isn’t tested because they changed.
It is tested because we sometimes continue relating to the person they used to be.

The anthropologist Margaret Mead once observed, what makes humans extraordinary isn’t simply intelligence.
It’s our remarkable ability to adapt to one another.

Perhaps that’s true of friendships too.
Maybe the healthiest friendships are not the ones where nobody changes…
They’re the ones where both people keep updating the picture they carry of each other.

Almost as if every few years they quietly ask,
“Tell me who you’ve become lately.”

And maybe that’s one of the purest forms of affection.
Not saying,
“I miss the old you.”

But saying,
“I’m excited to meet this new version of you.”

Because nothing makes another human feel more seen than realizing someone has noticed their growth.

Friendship isn’t preserved by holding on to yesterday. It survives because we keep making space for tomorrow.

One question before I leave…
Who else has become a better version of themselves while you’ve known them, and have you ever told them you’ve noticed? Has anybody remained absolutely the same?

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Good morning.

Today, I finally stopped postponing something I had been meaning to do for months.
Nothing dramatic.
I simply decided to create playlists of the music I love.

Jazz for quiet evenings.
Classical music for reading.
Old rock for long drives.
A few songs that instantly remind me of people I’ve loved, places I’ve lived, and seasons of my life I’d happily visit again.

It struck me that I had spent far more time thinking about doing it than actually doing it.
Funny how often life works that way.

That small decision led me to a much larger question.

Why do we humans need hobbies?

Probably, a hobby is one of the few places in modern life where there is no audience to impress, no deadline to chase, and no algorithm deciding whether you’ve done well enough.
It is a place where you can simply enjoy being curious.

Psychologists have found that when we’re deeply absorbed in something we love a state they call flow, our minds become quieter. Worries fade into the background.
Time seems to disappear. For a little while, we stop performing life and simply live it.

Perhaps that explains why the happiest people I’ve met usually have something they do that nobody asked them to do.

Their hobby isn’t escaping life.
It’s helping them return to life with a little more patience, perspective, and generosity.

And there’s something else I’ve noticed.
Hobbies have an unexpected way of strengthening relationships.

A grandfather teaches his granddaughter to fish.
Two friends discover they both love photography.
A couple learns to dance after thirty years of marriage.
A parent and child spend an afternoon building something together.

The hobby becomes almost incidental.
The memories become permanent.

Maybe that’s why hobbies matter so much.
They don’t just tell us what we enjoy.

They quietly reveal who we are when nobody is watching.

And before I leave you today, I’d love to know…
What hobby has quietly changed your life? Is there any hobby that comes to your mind that involves another person who shares the interest?

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Good morning.

A few days ago, I bought myself a new car.
Oddly enough, the car isn’t what has stayed with me.
The decision has.

It took me almost three months.
Five test drives.
Countless comparisons.
Endless YouTube reviews.
Negotiating prices.
Changing my mind about the colour.
Wondering whether I really needed the upgraded model.

By the time I finally said, “Yes,” I felt relieved.
But then another thought quietly appeared.

Who, exactly, made that decision?
Was it really me?
Or was it the sum of thousands of experiences that had quietly shaped me long before I ever walked into the dealership?

Psychologists often tell us that the conscious mind is only the visible tip of the iceberg. Beneath it sits an astonishing amount of invisible programming our memories, fears, habits, childhood experiences, values, social approval, and emotional associations.

We like to think we buy a car because of its engine.

Sometimes we’re buying the feeling we imagine driving it will give us.
Sometimes we’re buying our parents’ approval.
Sometimes we’re buying freedom.
Sometimes we’re buying the version of ourselves we hope to become.

The fascinating part is that most of this happens without us ever noticing.
Perhaps that’s true for all of us.

Every decision seems to ask dozens of silent questions.

Do I trust this?
Do I deserve this?
Will people admire it?
Will I regret not buying it?
Am I paying for quality… or for a logo?
Am I choosing with confidence… or with fear?

The remarkable thing is that our brains answer many of these questions before we ever become aware they were asked.

Maybe that’s why purchasing something isn’t simply a financial decision.

It’s an emotional autobiography.

The next time you’re about to buy something whether it’s a car, a watch, a book, or even a cup of coffee pause for just a moment.
Not to ask,
“Is this worth the money?”

But perhaps a more interesting question:
“What inside me is saying yes?”

Because understanding ourselves may be the wisest investment we’ll ever make.

As I leave you, I urge you to ask yourself, “What’s one important decision you’ve made that, looking back, revealed something unexpected about yourself?”

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Good morning.

Some movies entertain us.

A few stay with us.

And then there are those rare films that quietly become companions for life.

For me, one of those has always been International Velvet. I must have watched it a dozen times over the years, and somehow it speaks to me a little differently each time.

The story follows Tatum O’Neal’s character, Velvet. In what seems like an impossibly cruel twist of fate, she loses both her parents in a car accident and is forced to leave everything familiar behind. She arrives in a new country carrying little more than grief… and an extraordinary love for horses.

That love becomes her anchor.

It doesn’t make life easier. Quite the opposite.

She trains when others are sleeping. She misses out on much of what most teenagers would call “the best years.” She is laughed at, doubted and often misunderstood. Yet something remarkable happens.

The people around her begin to notice.

Her aunt notices.

Her aunt’s boyfriend notices.

A coach notices.

Passion has a curious way of attracting believers.

Eventually, against enormous odds, she wins Olympic gold and, somewhere along the journey, also finds love.

Yes, I know.

It’s only a movie.

But sometimes fiction reminds us of truths we’ve quietly forgotten.

I’ve often wondered why some people discover a passion powerful enough to shape an entire life while others spend years simply drifting from one distraction to another. Is passion something we’re born with? Does it arrive through hardship? Or is it waiting patiently until we give it our full attention?

For me, the common thread wasn’t comfort.

It was commitment.

Of course, living passionately isn’t easy.

It asks for sacrifices that often go unnoticed. It may cost comfort, popularity, certainty, and sometimes even ordinary happiness.

But perhaps the opposite costs even more.

A life without something that deeply matters.

Maybe that is why we’re instinctively drawn to people who live with purpose. Even if we wouldn’t choose their struggles, we admire the fire that carries them through.

I have a question for you?

What passion has quietly shaped your life—and what price has it been worth paying?

What has been the “horse” in your life?

What is the one thing that would still matter to me even if nobody applauded?

Perhaps each of us has something like that.

Perhaps we need to listen to ourselves to find it.

Until tomorrow,
Bob

Today, I woke up feeling grateful for a stranger.

Years ago, I had just moved to a new city for work. New apartment. New office. New faces.
From the outside, everything looked exciting.
On the inside, I was lonely.

Have you ever noticed something curious? Sometimes the bigger the crowd, the lonelier you feel.

I attended office parties, apartment gatherings, weekend events… yet somehow I always came home feeling like I hadn’t truly met anyone.

I kept wondering:

“How do people make genuine friends so effortlessly?”

Then one evening, while watching television, I heard a professional speaker say something that stayed with me:

“Don’t chase butterflies with a net. Build a garden, and the butterflies will come.”

At first, I dismissed it as one of those nice-sounding motivational quotes.
But months later, it finally clicked.

He wasn’t talking about butterflies.
He was talking about people.

Most of us spend our lives wondering:

“How do I find better friends?”

Perhaps we’re asking the wrong question.
Maybe the better question is:

“Am I becoming the kind of friend I would love to have?”

That realization quietly changed my life.
Instead of trying to impress people, I began working on myself.

I listened more than I spoke.
I smiled more often.
I remembered people’s names.
I became genuinely curious about their stories.
I laughed more.
I judged less.

I learned that good hygiene, good manners and being dependable are surprisingly attractive qualities.

Most importantly, I stopped asking,

“Who will be there for me?”

and started asking,

“Whose day can I make a little better today?”

Slowly but surely, wonderful people entered my life.
Some became close friends.
Some became lifelong friends.

And I often think back to that anonymous speaker who unknowingly altered the direction of my life.
Whoever you are…
Thank you.

One thought before we part…

If your heart were a garden, what would people find growing there today?

Send me some flowers!

Until tomorrow,
Bob
