Remember V? It was a sci-fi mini-series in the early 80s. Human-looking alien lizards land on Earth. They appear friendly at first, but then it turns out…well, see the title of the post.

My memory is fuzzy on this point, but I think they wanted to capture humans and use us for our nutrients. Or take the water from our oceans. Or maybe both. Hey, if you have the ability to construct a spaceship capable of FTL speed travel, along with synthetic skin that appears 100% natural, Earth is your buffet. You’ve earned it.

At least I hope they wanted to exploit the planet in some way. It might have been a better story if they came in peace and we just freaked out once we figured out they ate their ravioli with a forked tongue.

I saw the original series when I about 7 or 8. The scene where the human woman had twins, one human, the other… OMG LIZARD BABY! Gave me nightmares for a few days.

I have fond memories of watching the original series (and movie a year later). You may not have heard that ABC is remaking the mini-series, V, (first episode: Nov. 3rd). I’m excited, although I think it’s going to be a lot harder for me to accept the silly premise of the series 25+ years later.

I mean, humans being used for their nutrients? Whose going to buy that nowadays?

I think many media outlets are so afraid of being accused of bias that they are reluctant to challenge obvious falsehoods. There are other reasons too–fact-checking requires resources and news networks in particular are more concerned about their bottom line.

You also have to be sharp and study a lot to challenge someone on the spot in an interview. But there are actions networks could take to make their guests more accountable for what they say. As of now, lying on a national talk show is all benefit and no penalty. That’s not good for discourse.

Can I win the Nobel Peace Prize? Sure, I haven’t done anything now, but I might in the future!

President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize today. One of the reasons cited was his work to improve international diplomacy. Man, talking to Muslims is more dangerous than I thought.

The situation is unfair in a way because while the award is premature and might create a backlash against him, it’s not like he asked for the award. I’m not sure what the Nobel committee was thinking. Trying to give him a guilt-trip in case he thinks of starting any new wars in the future? Maybe the world is so sick of American imperialism that every new President is going to get awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in his or her first year, just for insurance.

The Nobel committee also mentioned wanting to assist President Obama in achieving his global agenda. I’ve never seen the Nobel prize. Does it look like a gold-plated spiked club? No? Then I don’t see how that’s going to help.

I don’t want to sound snide. I like the President, and I’d rather him get it than a lot of other people. Maybe the real problem is that in the world today, there is no obvious choice.
