Hello World! We have a blog update here after many moons (and suns and quasars)! The Trade Show Calendar has been updated with the 2020 shows and some of the early 2021 shows as well. The CoronaVirus pandemic has some trade shows moving dates to the Fall of 2020, others moving to a date to be determined at a later date, and others moving to 2021, while Photokina has jumped all the way to May 2022.

Aside from the impact of COVID-19, 2020 is a leap year, and that changes the dates/weeks some trade shows happen, especially if they have a preset such as “Monday to Thursday”. A leap year has 52 weeks and TWO days, which means dates get pushed, some run into weekend boundaries and such, meaning some trade shows may move up or down by one week in the calendar.

Latest Update: December 23 (2020): Waiting to see how things go with the vaccine situation before I attempt another update of the calendar… All trade shows are subject to change/cancellation as of the time of writing due to the COVID-19 situation… Some shows moved to the Fall of 2020, others to 2021/2022, while others have TBD dates… As a result, the calendar is more jumpy than usual… Trade shows that don’t have confirmed dates have “??-??” as their date… SPE (every March) goes to a different city every year… CES changed their website to a .tech…

Black Friday 2019 is over! If you are interested in deals, follow our dedicated Camera Deals blog and/or if you are a fan of RSS, it also offers a FREE full-text RSS feed…

Welcome to a tradition unlike any other. The Black Friday camera and photography Ads digest here at the Noisy blog The BF Ads are no longer the cornerstone of Black Friday but they inform of deals and what to expect or beat at other online retailers as we head to the final stretch of the year…

UPDATE: this post is a digest of the leaked and teased BF ads…

BF Ads 2019 TL:DR: A bit of a TL:DR, the best deals can be found at Kohl’s because it offers $15 “Kohls Cash” on every $50 spent (between November 25-29) and at Target which offers free Target gift cards with select purchases and 5% back if you pay with the Target RED cards…

NOTE that “Kohls Cash” is not cash, it’s more of a promotional coupon. It typically lasts only for a few designated dates after it is issued and must be used within the designated time period. Regular Kohls shoppers have no trouble spending them but if you are not a Kohls shopper, make sure there are enough things of interest to spend it on before buying there…

ON PRICING: as it is the nature with MAP and price-matches, the prices of standard kits are likely to be the same across most retailers, eg Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Sears, etc. The additional freebies (eg Target gift cards) and rewards promotions (eg Kohls Cash) may vary though…

LATEST UPDATE: November 17 in 2019: the digest is LIVE… WordPress just switched to the new horrible (?) “Blocks” editor, so chances of errors are elevated…

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2018 are almost upon us! This year, we are planning a more back-to-basics approach. The deals will be posted one by one (as usual) at our Camera Deals blog. This blog has a full-text RSS feed which is hosted at Feedburner, so if anything happens to the website, you can use Feedburner as a backup. Feedburner is hosted on Google’s own servers which are much more reliable than what a poor old blogger can afford

This year I won’t be doing rolling summary round-ups here at the main blog. I may do a “best of” type of a post if circumstances dictate it, but the on-going MEGA summary post won’t happen because it eats up time that I could be using to post even more new deals [instead of never-ending summaries/editing].

UPDATE NOV-06-2918: the Trade Show Calendar for 2019 will be added later this week! If you have any updates, eg new trade shows starting up in 2019 [or corrections of any kind], please use the online contact form or leave a comment here…

And we are back once again! We have already started picking up momentum in the Camera Deals blog as we are building up to the Black Friday 2018 madness which will come a bit earlier this year, Friday [obviously] November 23.

Time sure does fly! We’ve been doing this for 13 (!!!) years [e-Dinosaur alert!]. Here are some of our early posts back when I was using Livejournal. After all, up until a few weeks ago, George R. R. Martin himself was using Livejournal [then again he writes his voluminous books using Wordstar on MS-DOS]

To put 13 digital camera years in perspective, some of the cameras we were talking about then: the early stages of the Canon 5D “Beatle mania”, Panasonic launched the LX-series with the LX1, Minolta had its own 5D DSLR, the Samsung PRO 815 superzoom [up to 420mm eq], the Nikon D2X professional DSLR, the Leica Modul-R, the Fuji F10 [early precursor to the Fuji F31fd cult camera], and so forth… Meanwhile among the hot topics of discussion back then was the Figure of Merit formula… . Numbers-wise, Kodak was the #1 in digital camera unit sales in the US market, with HP (!!!) being number five… And on and on and on…

As far as this [the main blog] we will continue with some of our recurring features, and also start new projects, more specifically things that are not typically covered, eg niche topics. If you have any pet ideas you want to see done/covered, please feel free to leave a comment, or use the online contact form…

Mission accomplished! The mid-February 2018 price chart series is now complete! The Fixed Lens Cameras had some price activity, but we only had one new camera, but at the same time, we “lost” zero cameras since the November 2017 update.

We continue to have a healthy mix of sensor sizes and zoom ratios, from primes to superzooms, and 1 inch all the way up to 35mm full frame. Just don’t expect a 35mm full frame superzoom any time soon

For a larger size, here’s the direct link to the picture. For even larger, use your browser’s zoom feature (eg, CTRL +) or use your favorite image app.

As you can see, the overall trend is for prices to drop, especially among the more competitive segments. On the other hand, cameras like the Sony RX1-series and the Sigma DP-series are in a league of their own and prices are at the mercy of the manufacturer. But still, just like DSLRs and mirrorless there is no price range to the bottom.

The majority of the RAWsumers remain cameras with short zoom, but the superzooms continue to increase. The only new addition we had since November 2017 was the Panasonic ZS200. We lost zero cameras since then.

It still amazes me how Sony is managing to keep all the RX series cameras, in all three lines still alive and kicking. The latest price changes broke the symmetric price-staircase pattern of the RX100 series, mayhaps the fallout of the Mark V having disappointment a segment of the RAWsumer fandom.

The APS-C CAMERAS

As you can see in the chart below, all is quiet on the APS-C front. Except for a small price increase, the prices remained the same. The Fuji X70 is on its way out, as of this update, only Amazon has it available. It is gone and unorderable from B&H and Adorama.

THE 1 INCH CAMERAS

Once upon a time the 1/1.7″ sensors reigned supreme in this segment. Now the 1-inch sensors are the most common. A little bit over half of the cameras in this group (37 of them) use 1-inch sensors. There’s a lonely Canon with a 1.5″, a couple of M43rds, and four full framers (Sony RX1* and Leica Q Typ 116).

Where Does The Data Come From?

The prices are the consensus prices between Amazon and B&H Photo and Adorama as of February 23 in 2018. These are new condition with USA warranty prices, from authorized dealers. All the prices are the body only kit prices. Older cameras that are no longer available in new condition with USA warranty from the above retailers, or are available in a very limited fashion, are not included.

This is the biggest one of the groups, it’s Mirrorless time! Already this segment added six new cameras (five of which in 2018 and that was just from three manufacturers).

FLAGSHIPS (PRICE-WISE) PER SYSTEM

We have two new entries in the Flagships chart! Both Panasonic and Fuji have replaced their flagships with more expensive models, the Panasonic GH5S was a +$500, while the Fuji X-F1 a +$400 over their predecessor prices in the November charts.

Of the remaining cameras, we had two modest price drops, the Olympus E-M1 II and the Canon M5. Remaining at the same price were the least “mobile” (price wise), the Leica, the Sigma and the Sony leader.

MANY AND MORE MIRRORLESS

Six new mirrorless came out since our last update, but you only see five of them. That’s because the Olympus E-PL9 is not available in the US market and this is a price chart, it wouldn’t make sense to include in the charts without a price.

The new entries are the Leica CL (came out a few days after our November chart), Fuji X-H1 and X-A5 and the Panasonic G9 and GX9. Two mirrorless cameras “left” this chart (became unavailable for purchase at the tracked retailers as set forth at the bottom of the post), the Fuji X-T10 and the Sony a5000 with 16-50mm kit.

Just like previous years, the chart is too huge to post as a unibody, so I’m splitting it in two. The Panasonic GX9 is the “constant”, it’s at the bottom of the first half and the top of the second half. The one that virtually stitches it together…

As you can see by the red plus and minus signs next to the camera prices, prices have been a lot more alive and active here compared to the APS-C DSLRs. Price drops overwhelmed the price increases which is typically a healthy thing to see in a market of digital products. Even the price increases were not quite that bad, the X-T20 went up to $900 but the kit with a lens remained at $900. Looking at the chart, it looks like Fuji increased the price of the X-A3 just to make the just-released X-A5 more appetizing.

But the bottom of the market did not fall out, as you can see the price drops were more in the upper side of $500. The prices shown here at the body only kits (unless a camera doesn’t have one). Check also the “Take Pictures With” chart further down to see what one looking to jump right into a system would be paying.

In Part #2 above, it’s where many of the forum battles are fought Prices went up and down here as well, with some dramatic drops, like $500 drops for the Panasonic GH4 and Sony a7r II, a7 II. The Fuji X-T1 had an even more dramatic drop of $700, heavily discounted to $600 right now.

The price increases where nowhere near as high, the top was +$200 for the Olympus PEN-F (not sure why) and the Fuji X-PRO2 (mayhaps repositioning with the X-T2).

Take Pictures With KITS

This chart shows the lowest prices for a camera with lens kit. Only cameras available with lenses are included. The lowest body only prices can be found at the top of the big chart above.

The days of the race to the bottom are over, even though we had a sizeable discount of the Olympus E-M10 II with 14-42. The Panasonic G7 with 14-42 is not a new camera, but it is new to the “Take Pictures With” chart because it dropped $200, putting it under $800 and into this chart

And we are back now with Episode II in our mid-February 2018 series of the Camera Price Charts, we take a look at the APS-C DSLRs. We had no new APS-C DSLRs since our November update and we “lost” the Nikon D5300 as it is no longer available in new condition at the three reference retailers [details at the bottom of the post].

The story of this update is the madness of Canon’s pricing. Both the D-Rebel T6s and T6 prices have skyrocketed, while the illogical pricing of the D-Rebel T5i continues (the body only costs $100 more than the T5i with the kit lens).

This is the full size version. For further zooming, use your browser’s zoom feature (eg CTRL +) or your favorite image editor.

In the charts in this post, cameras with prices going up have a red plus next to their price, while cameras with prices going down have a red minus next to their price.

Steady or stagnating are the prices otherwise among the non-entry-level models. The Sigma SD1 price jump is because the retailer that had it for $1800 (Adorama) no longer carriers the body only. Pentax was the only one who gave their cameras some discounting, the KP dropped by $100 and the K3 II by $20. The effects of essentially manufacturer price control in full bloom.

All three of Sony’s DSLRs continues, two APS-C here (a68, a77 II) and one full framer [that’s in the Full Frame Price Chart].

The Canon price increases have also tilted the prices of the “Take Pictures With” updates, and the number of choices has decreased as we lost Nikon D5300 and Pentax K-S2 due to old age, while the D-Rebel T6i w/18-55 climbed over $700 which is our cut-off point.

From the prices above, someone looking for their first entry-point DSLR is probably better served looking at manufacturer refurbished or used or grey market cameras. It is hard to justify paying those prices for older and aging DSLRs.

NOTES and FOOTNOTES

no new entries in this edition, but the Nikon D5300 and the Pentax K-S2 with 18-50 are gone

Prices are uniform among the three tracked retailers, with the following exceptions: the Canon D-Rebel T6s is only available at B&H Photo; the Nikon D3300 w/18-55 is not available at Adorama

Typos, errors, confusions, omissions are always possible. Please leave a comment or use the online contact form. If I don’t notice an error and no one mentions it, it won’t get fixed on its own

And we are back with another edition of the Price Charts series! We take a snapshot of the prices and compare them to each other and previous installments of the Camera Price Charts. As before, we start with 35mm full frame cameras. Not just interchangeable lens, but any camera that has a 35mm FF size sensor!

In order to make this chart readable, manageable and relevant, the various Leicas ranging from $4K to $8K are not included.

FINALLY FULL FRAME DISCOUNTS – from Sony and Canon

Prices were upticking in our November 2017 edition but the theme this time around is discounting. And not just trivial discount. The Sony a7r II and a7 II dropped $500 each, the Canon 5D Mark III dropped $300, and the Canon 1D X II and Sony a7s II dropped $200 each. The prices in yellow in the chart right below indicate cameras with price drops…

Here is a link to the full size version of the chart. Zoom the image with your browser (CTRL +) or image editor for more magnification.

Only one camera went up in price, the a7r by $50, but that may have been because in November Amazon’s Price Bots price-matched some 3rd-party seller. So in practice, none of the cameras went up in price.

We did not have any new 35mm full frame cameras since then, in fact all of the new iLC cameras in 2018 so far have been mirrorless.

Absent by the discounting in Nikon, so it will be interesting to see whether they take the bait. Sony’s full frame entry point is now $800, and thanks to the big Canon 6D price drop, Canon’s entry-point is $1000, leaving Nikon’s entry point further away at $1500. These are of course new condition prices at authorized dealers. One can buy them for less if they are willing to look into the refurbished, grey market and used markets.

NOTES and FOOTNOTES

no new entries and no retirements in this edition

Prices are uniform among the three tracked retailers, with the following exceptions: the Canon 5D Mark III is only available at B&H Photo, the Sony a7r and Nikon D810A only available at Amazon, while the Sony RX1 and RX1R are not available at Adorama

the Leica 35mm full frame cameras were removed to make the chart more readable (they cluster between 4K and 8K)

Typos, errors, confusions, omissions are always possible. Please leave a comment or use the online contact form.

We have a new reference post here at the main blog, a “living document” of the ever-expanding benefits (and restrictions) of the Amazon Prime program. This will be updated many times as things change, thus the “Latest Update” section below…

LATEST UPDATE: April 28 in 2018: Prime Membership fees will increase to $119… the Prime Chase VISA now gets 5% rewards at Whole Foods… major new benefit, free standard shipping at Woot… If you want to quickly skim/scan this long post, focus on the bold phrases :)… Created on 2/8/17… For the most recent additions, follow the [NEW!] tags below…

TABLE OF CONTENTS

SHIPPING BENEFITS (free 2-day, free Woot shipping, slow shipping credits, etc)

5% Cashback year-long

SHOPPING BENEFITS (Early Access, Price-Matches, etc)

ACCESS to PRIME-EXCLUSIVE SERVICES

MULTIMEDIA (eBooks, Video, Music, Twitch, etc)

CLOUD and PHOTO (unlimited photo storage, free S&H on photo prints)

SHIPPING BENEFITS

A brand new shipping benefit was added to the Prime membership on February 18 in 2018, you can now get FREE standard shipping at Woot for most purchases. The Shirts sub-woot gets free express shipping even. Not eligible for free shipping is the Gourmet sub-Woot (formerly Wine). Individual product pages will mention whether an item is eligible for Prime free shipping, you don’t have to memorize anything. To get the free standard shipping, you have to be a Prime member AND logon to Woot using your Amazon Prime account. [NEW!]

Prime started as a 2-day free shipping service. Over time, Amazon decorated it like a Christmas tree, adding all kinds of other features and services and benefits. In parallel, the threshold for free shipping for non-members rose from $25 to $35, and now it is at $49+ (or $25+ in printed books, a benefit-match of the Barnes and Noble website). However, in mid-February 2017, the trend was reversed, the threshold is now back down to $35 for non-Prime members, perhaps a “price match” of the Jet-fued change by Walmart. But still, the raison d^etre of Prime is the free 2-day shipping benefit. The current annual subscription is $100 per year (paid in advance; annual fee as of early February 2017). But if you are more of a seasonal shopper (eg the holiday shopping season or back to school or Valentine’s gifts fro all) they have a month to month option, $11/mo without a long term commitment.

Products that are sold and shipped by Amazon itself, or “fulfilled by Amazon” (sent by sellers to Amazon warehouses/facilities, and when someone purchases the items, they are processed/shipped by Amazon) get free 2-day shipping. Actual delivery time can vary, from faster than two days to slower, depending on many variables. They use a variety of shipping services, including their own drivers, the Post Office, FedEx, UPS, many others, along with combinations (eg Amazon hand off to a local Post Office that makes the drop).

If a Prime 2-day delivery does not arrive on the scheduled/estimated time given when you placed an order, you have a make-up benefit: you can contact customer service, inform them of the delay, and you will receive an extra month of Prime to make up for the delay. I believe the restriction is one free extra month per customer per calendar month.

Depending on warehouse proximity and product availability (and order time), if you place a $35+ order of eligible items, you may qualify for free 1-Day delivery, instead of 2-day delivery. The product page and shopping cart let you know if that is the case. Otherwise 1-day delivery is a for-pay upgrade to your order.

But if you don’t need/want to receive your purchase immediately, Amazon instituted an optional “No Rush Credit” benefit that it too expanded over time. The street name for this benefit is “slow shipping credit” For some eligible orders (not sure how it is determined), if you select the slowest shipping option, instead of 2-day or standard shipping, you may be offered credits [it’s not guaranteed every time; the shopping cart will tell you before you place your order] you can use in future Amazon purchases. Some examples:

$1 digital media credit (ebooks, mp3, instant video, etc)

$5 Prime Pantry store credit (counters the Pantry Box $6 flat shipping fee)

$20 credit towards Amazon in-house Services (installation, furniture assembly, etc)

you can now see your balance at amazon.com/norushcredits while logged on to your Amazon account (see screenshot below)

A lesser known Prime feature is the option to receive Prime-like 2-day free shipping from 3rd-party sellers that ship the product directly to you (not fulfilled by Amazon). To figure this out, you must be logged on to your Amazon Prime account, and you have to look at two spots in the product detail page. UPDATE: I found screenshot, follow the annotated areas…

For media purchases (eg printed books, DVDs, etc), they offer release-date delivery if you place a pre-order. In other words, they will either ship ahead of time, or ship with same-day delivery of sorts, so you end up getting your new music CD on Friday (Friday is the new Tuesday).

SHIPPING BENEFIT RESTRICTIONS

Oversize items or items that require special handling or delivery (eg huge HDTVs, heavy furniture, etc) are delivered separately, by appointment. They do not go through the Prime 2-day shipping process.

The Add-ON program is the true Nemesis of Prime members. It was introduced as a counterbalance to the free 2-day shipping. They probably discovered that shipping $3 items with 2-day shipping was way too expensive (when you factor in packaging material, assembling the order, credit card fees, etc). To be allowed by the shopping cart to purchase an Add-ON item, you must place an order of $25+ in eligible products (sold or fulfilled by Amazon). You can get to $25+ with a mix of Add-ON items, or regular items, or any combination. Many (but not all) sub-$5 items that are either sold-by-Amazon or fulfilled-by-Amazon are marked as “Add-ON items”. A few items under $10 are also designated as “Add-ON”. Prices change all the time at Amazon, so it’s possible the “Add-ON” designation algorithm runs separately from whatever changes prices – this may explain some discrepancies in Add-ON status. You can recognize an Add-ON item on product pages with graphics like this (appearance varies depending on screen/viewport size, etc):

Back in the early days of Prime, Amazon used to give Prime members $1 credits if an item (that was otherwise not eligible for free shipping) got free shipping for non-Prime members. This benefit went away a few years ago, but it got reborn as the “No Rush Credit”.

FINANCIAL BENEFITS

You can get 5% cashback at Amazon through the rotating quarterly promotions (up to $1500 per quarter per credit card) from Discover and Chase and other companies, or if you have a grandfathered Citi Forward that hasn’t been phased out yet. But now you can get 5% throughout the year without having to do the quarterly song and dance.

If you have the Amazon Chase VISA credit card, and if you are a Prime member, your default 3% cashback on Amazon purchases has been switched to 5%, including Prime membership fees. If that hasn’t happened, contact customer support and ask them to look into it. The Chase VISA lets you transfer the cashback to your bank account or post it to your statement balance or convert them to gift cards. So you have flexibility!

If you have the Amazon Store credit card (can only be used at Amazon, it’s a true “Store credit card”), as a Prime member, you can upgrade it to a Prime Store credit card, and this too gets 5% cashback once it becomes a Prime Store card. Optionally you can jump on favorable financing offers in lieu of the 5% cashback. Depending on the situation, it’s your choice to pick whatever benefits you the most. The cashback is posted as a statement credit to your Store Card account.

As Amazon is organically digesting Whole Foods, they are integrating more and more. Starting February 20 in 2018, per the press release, Prime members with the Amazon Prime Chase VISA credit card will also earn 5% rewards at Whole Foods. Non-Prime members will earn 3%, the same rate they earn for amazon.com purchases. [NEW!]

SHOPPING BENEFITS

This section covers shopping, rather than shipping benefits. This list is growing too. Once upon a time, the only shopping benefit was the Prime Early Access. Now there’s much and more. But Prime Early Access is the bigger benefit. A significant number of Lightning Deals become available exclusively to Prime-members during the first 30 minutes they go live. Most items don’t sell out during their 4-6 hour lightning deal window, but the few really good deals, can already be gone within the first 30 minutes. You can recognize this in the Lightning Deals with these markers:

Once a calendar year, so far at least, sometime in July, Amazon has a Prime DAY event, where more than the usual amount of lightning deals are offered, but the majority of them are restricted to Prime members only. They’ve done it in 2015 and 2016 so far.

Amazon does some price-matching of high profile offers launched at other retailers. Some of the price-matched offers are only available for Prime members. I do not know whether this is a question of quantity (eg if they don’t restrict it, they’ll run out of items faster), or simply another reason to convince people to join Prime. Likewise, a few media releases (eg DVD sets) have had the Prime only designation, even though they were not on sale or a price-match, but rather a new release. Likewise, it could be a question of availability, or Prime bait

If you have a device that supports Alexa (eg an Amazon Echo), they have dedicated special offers that you can only get if you order through Alexa Voice shopping (not through the website or app). If talking to walls gets boring, we can now shout at Alexa and Siri and Cortana

Sometimes, during the holiday shopping season, or other special events, they may have app-exclusive specials, that you can only buy through the app. There is a loophole to buy them using a web browser, but you still have to use the app to add it to a wishlist, and then purchase it through that with the web browser (perhaps of interest if you are using an open Wifi/cellular signal). But one way or the other, you still have to use the Amazon app to get these offers.

OPTION to USE other AMAZON SERVICES

Once upon time, shopping on Amazon was simple. Go to amazon.com and buy. Now there are many different options and that’s before you consider the companies they bought (eg Zappos, Woot, Abebooks, etc), or the ones they created as stand-alone (Wag, Casa, etc).

Prime is a gateway to using the following services – they are only available to Prime members.

PrimeNOW is perhaps the most distinct of them, as it offers local delivery within 1-2 hours. This is restricted to regions that offer this service, and it is limited to products that are currently in-stock at the nearby warehouse. Just like the regular Amazon website features products from 3rd-party sellers, so does PrimeNOW, except the 3rd-party sellers are local businesses and local restaurants. Orders have minimum purchase amounts for delivery, and a recommended tip is added to the order (you can remove it, but they see this as a service, similar to ordering pizza or takeout). Some camera and tech options are available, mostly popular and mass-market items. You won’t find tilt-shift lenses on PrimeNOW

PrimePantry on the other hand, is the most bizarre of these “nu” options. In a rather unusual attempt to compete with Costco, they offer various household items, sometimes at better prices than the regular Amazon website, sometimes not. Sometimes they have unique bundles or quantities of products. These items have to fit into a physical and virtual box, with a $6 flat delivery fee. They often run some promotions that waive the shipping fee, and you can also use the “No Rush” shipping credit mentioned above to counter it. Bottom line, you may get a better deal with this service than the regular website if you purchase a lot of items. You may also want to split orders between edibles and non-edibles. You don’t want the bathtub declogger dancing around in the same box as your organic chocolate chip cookies

AmazonFresh (local delivery of fresh and frozen and refrigerated foods) started as a superset of Prime. You paid $300 a year, and you got both a standard Prime membership and also a Fresh membership. The initial annual fee probably discouraged a lot of people, so now AmazonFresh is a $15 per month month-to-month no commitment service. This is more flexible – you can use it seasonally or as circumstances change. AmazonFresh is not just food though, you can get some electronics through it, such as Sandisk memory cards and Canon printers. It’s perhaps linked to the PrimeNOW facilities, which may explain the SDHC card potato chips with your steak Free delivery with orders of $40+. The $15/month fee is a foot through the door type of a fee, it doesn’t get you free delivery. This is actual delivery, people come to your door with appropriately sealed and packed containers with the food (including ice cream).

Yet another twist are the Sample Boxes. You pay for a box of sample consumable products (various types are available, you can get one of each kind). After you receive the order, the purchase amount is added to your Amazon account as a store credit that can be used towards future purchases of some of the items found in the sample box. You can see these options ahead of time, so you’ll know ahead of time where this is a good dea for you or not. But they didn’t stop there, they are even experimenting with individual samples at a smaller scale, you buy $2 samples, which get you a $2 credit towards future purchases of the same product. PRO TIP: if some products belong in overlapping sample-box credit categories, the shopping cart will stack all eligible coupons. I believe there was one protein bar box that qualified for three separate credits, making it essentially free.

Another odd-ball service for Prime members are the Dash Buttons. You pay $5, you receive the physical button at home, and a $5 credit towards your first order made with these Wifi-enabled goofy buttons is added to your Amazon account. But that’s not all – they also added virtual dash buttons too, which you can use online, which is rather ironic. However, some people find them useful enough ~ otherwise they would have had the same fate as the Kindle Fire Phone

A Prime membership also qualifies you for 20% off on diaper subscriptions through the Amazon Family portal. Just under 50 options are available. Separate but without a discount is the Prime-exclusive line of “Elements” products, currently consisting of baby wipes and nothing else. Babies will grow up knowing they are Prime Element babies

Last but not least, for households with multiple members, they offer benefit sharing. The actual benefits vary by service. Typically they cover a second adult, and up to four children. This happens under the Amazon Households umbrella. A primer (no pun intended) on what can be shared and with whom and under what circumstances can be found at the Households Help page.

MULTIMEDIA EXPLOSION

This is another benefit category that exploded through time and keeps on growing.

The Prime Video service gets you access to a variety of movies and TV shows, including original Amazon content. Just like Netflix, you can watch as much as you want while you are a paying member, but once the membership ends, you own nothing. This may come as a surprise to you, but a handful of photograhy documentaries and videos are included with Prime! They were not there the last time I checked (a couple of years ago).

They recently launched a new layer to their video offering, additional premium channel monthly subscriptions (like adding extra stuff on your standard cable subscription) including HBO, Showtime, Starz, and more. These are month to month per channel, you are in control. This is another “Prime bait” feature because you can’t sign up for these without a Prime subscription. Of camera and photo interest, the Great Courses channel is available, along with a few documentary channels (nature videos/photography).

Just like the video services, Amazon is continuing their Prime Music service. You have access to subset of music compared to a full-featured service, but it’s included for free. You can also use this in conjunction with music you purchased and music you uploaded at Amazon. But their integration is not as good as Google Play’s Music (which includes a lot more storage for your own music).

But if you are interested in their full-feature music streaming service, as a Prime member, you get a monthly or prepaid discount for Music Unlimited. As of February 2017, you pay $8 month, instead of $10. You also get Prime-exclusive discounts on this and the Family plan if you prepay for a year (12 months of service).

Yet another recently released feature is Audible Channels, you get a few dozen audiobooks to listen to (you do not own them), along with a handful of audio productions and newsclips, all for free using the Audible app. This benefit is an “Audible bait”, because if millions of people go to Audible to checkout the freebies, they are more likely to buy more Audible content Plus, audio plays and serialized podcasts are making a comeback.

Prime Reading is perhaps one of the most practical/useful features, you can “borrow” ebooks from a rotating library of around 1000 options. You can read as many as you want, but you can only “check out” up to ten items at a time. Think of it like the library, you can borrow as much as you want, but only ten at a time. There are no restrictions on how often you can exchange them for new content. Another feature, that occasionally includes photography and related magazine single issues, is the Monthly Magazine Newsstand. You can borrow single-issue magazines from a rotating choice every month. These too count towards your “ten out” limit.

Next up is one of the oldest Prime benefits, the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library. You need an Amazon hardware device (e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire Phone) to access this feature. You can borrow one e-book per month from a preset selection. You can keep it as long as you want, or switch it every calendar month. Note however that this benefit is essentially rendered useless if you sign-up for the Kindle Unlimited (KU) service, because most of the ebooks are in both services, and Amazon shows the KU option over the Lending Library. Here’s their Help page.

But wait, there’s a third e-book benefit, Kindle First. Every calendar month, you pick one pre-release e-book for FREE, from a choice of six options. You can read it immediately while everybody else can buy it the next month. Most of these ebooks end up in Kindle Unlimited. You won’t find blockbusters or best sellers here (obviously).

Another reading-related benefit, you can get six months of free digital access to the Washington Post. You login with your Amazon account to activate this six month freebie.

Amazon’s purchase of Twitch led to the inevitable integration of benefits in Twitch Prime which gets you ad-free viewing, one free channel subscription per month, and free in-game content. You also get discounts on select video game purchases, which goes hand-in-hand with Twitch. But Twitch is not just gaming. Under the “Creative” tab you will find streams by photographers and other creatives. If you find channels of interest, this is where the free subscription per month can come in handy (and support those channels too).

CLOUD and PHOTO

Amazon is doing a lot better profit-wise with their enterprise cloud services, so it’s not a surprise they expanded into the “consumer cloud”. As a Prime member, you get unlimited free storage for photographs, and 5GB of storage to use on everything else (video, documents, etc). Per the terms of use, the Prime Photos are for personal and non-commercial use. They explicitly state in the FAQ page:

“You may not use it in connection with a professional photography business or other commercial service.”

Amazon also launched its own Photo Prints Service (custom photo books, conventional photo prints, cards, calendars, etc). Everyone can use the photo prints service, but Prime members get free shipping on every order regardless of amount. Or if a Prime member’s order total is $15+, you get free expedited shipping.

I just updated the Trade Show Calendar with the 2018 dates. We have quite a few changes this and next year, as Photokina will have its last September show in 2018, and then, starting with 2019, will move to Mays, still in Cologne (Germany) of course. A number of other trade shows are also shifting around the calendar…

WHAT IS THIS? this is an on-going permanent reference page of the new serious/interesting cameras and lenses of 2017. This year we also brought back the “Scoreboard” tally. Please note this is a reference page, not a “breaking news” tracker, so it won’t necessarily be updated the millisecond a new camera comes out. We are out of the “news cycle” after all

LATEST UPDATE: November 21 in 2017: eBay is here too.
INTRODUCTION

Time flies, and just like that, Black Friday Ads are coming out already. Black Friday is earlier in the month after all, it is Friday November 24 in 2017, as Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday, not the last Thursday in November.

STRATEGY SESSION: during the MAP era, the Black Friday ads of the major chain stores feature similar camera kits but there are some exceptions. Entry-point Canon and Nikon DSLRs and Sony a-series APS-C mirrorless dominate the iLCs, while superzooms are the fixed-lens camera offerings. More instant cameras, action cams and drones are featured as they are more popular among the general consumers.

There’s no guarantee 2017 will be like 2016, but you can check the 2016 Digest for reference. Most of them will be, one way or another price-matched by the internets.

The popularity and advancement of smartphones, the parade of mirrorless options, and $1000-ish full frame DSLRs have not, as some of the doomsayers foretold, killed the serious fixed lens camera. Not only that, but we had three new models since our previous update in July 2017. One of the three was even a new segment for RAWsumers, the “serious elementproof action cam” in the Sony RX0.

RAWSUMERS KEEP ON CLICKING

The storied Canon G-series has now “graduated” to an APS-C sensor with the brand new G1X III, and its price too adjust upwards to factor the larger sensor size.

For the full size chart, click on the image below or use the direct PNG link.

It fascinating that Sony is doubling down on every single RX-series camera it made. They are all available at the three tracked authorized dealers, and if you follow their chart bars, they have a price staircase pattern, so you can find an RX100 or RX10 or RX1* camera if your budget is anywhere between $450 and $3300. Quite smart if you ask me!

There were no dramatic price changes or patterns, just seasonal adjustments, mostly upwards. The Ricoh GR II price drop was the smallest among all cameras in the November 2017 series, a mere $10 drop. The price non-changes are yet another sign of the “competitive truce” among the traditional camera manufacturers.

CHARTS BY SENSOR SIZE

Canon joined the APS-C RAWsumer party with the G1X III. Interestingly, despite all the Canon G-series models out there, Canon has yet to make a play in the “Big Sensor Primes” market, re-defined and popularized by the Fuji X100 series many years ago.

1-inch sensors are the most prevalent in this segment, with two new models appearing here. Sony is definitely in-love with this sensor size, as both the RX10, RX100 and new RX0 series are using this sensor. From there they have a big jump to 35mm full frame for the RX1* series. No middle ground for Sony

Click on the picture below or the direct link for the full size version of this chart.

APS-C and 1-inch sensors are the most dominant but there are RAWsumer cameras at these sensor sizes as well:

35mm full frame: the Sony RX* series

M43rds: the Panasonic LX100 with its Leica cousin

1.5-inch: the Canon G1X II – this sensor size may be done for as the G1X III went up to APS-C

the earlier days popular RAWsumer sensor sizes of 2/3″ and 1/1.x” are out of favor

NOTES and FOOTNOTES

we had three new entries since July 2017, the Sony RX0, RX10 IV and the Canon G1X III with an APS-C sensor now

since the previous chart, we did not lose any of the cameras. They all continue!

Prices are more or less uniform among the three tracked retailers

Typos, errors, confusions, omissions are always possible. Please leave a comment or use the online contact form.

This is the biggest of the Price Charts, with the most cameras and most charts too! It’s mirrorless time! They are after all “winning” 2017 by a score of 12-8 vs DSLRs. A field goal can no longer tie the game This is episode #3 in the November 2017 series.

GOODBYE NIKON 1 SYSTEM from the PRICE CHARTS
With this edition, we have a change in coverage. Even though Nikon’s 1-System cameras still remain at enough of the tracked retailers, I decided to remove them from this and future Mirrorless price charts because:

+ it’s a dead system
+ there is no movement in the prices
+ given their situation, they are more noise than signal

NEW VISUAL ELEMENTS in the CHARTS

We are introducing a new visual element in this edition of the Price Charts. On the right side of the bar, cameras that went down in price since the previous update have a red minus (-) next to them, while cameras that have gone up in price have a green-ish plus (+) next to them.

New cameras that have been officially announced since the previous edition of the Price Charts have their name highlighted in yellow highlighter in the actual charts.

THE FLAGSHIPS PER SYSTEM

The flagship chart is unchanged since last year. Both Sony (a7r III) and Panasonic (G9) and Leica (TL2) released new “deputy” flagships, but price-wise the Sony a9 and Panasonic GH5 remain the leaders. Some could argue that the G9 is the photographic flagship in the Panasonic M43rds line-up, but these are price charts

Discounts are tied with price increases. Both the Olympus E-M1 II (just recently) and the Fuji X-PRO 2 dropped in price. The X-PRO 2 currently has the same price as the X-T2 but I only include one flagship per manufacturer. On the price increases, the Sigma SD Quattro H went up by $200, while the Canon M5 went up by $50.

SO MANY MIRRORLESS CAMERAS, SO LITTLE TIME

There are so many mirrorless cameras I had to break the Price Chart in two. As usual, it is sorted by price, and with the new visual elements signalling price increase or decrease since the previous update. The Olympus PEN-F is the constant, it’s at the bottom of the first chart and the top of the second chart. The virtual clue that stitches them together

We being with the sub-$1000 segment [click on the picture above or the direct link to the full size image] where we have two entries, the third generation Olympus E-M10 and the Canon M100 mirrorless kit.

The overall theme of this segment is price drops, headlined by Olympus and Sony. The two increases may have been strategic, both Olympus E-M10 II and Panasonic G7 “defending” the price point as they released newer and more expensive models (E-M10 III, G9 respectively). Companies sometimes use price adjustments to try to encourage customers towards newer models. For example, the Fuji X-T1 was going for $800 with a free lens, but when newer X-models came out, the X-T1 price skyrocketed, to nudge photographers towards the newer models.

Despite having multiple players though, the price drops are more of aging models, here too we have a competitive truce between the major manufacturers.

And now we go to the four figures mirrorless that will leave you walletless Click on the image below for a large size or go directly to the full size image.

The entry-point of 35mm full frame mirrorless increased to $1000 [last mirrorless price chart had a $950 entry-point] with the good old Sony a7. Yes, the first generation model, it is still sticking around at all tracked retailers.

Fuji is the main discounter here with both the X-PR0 2 and X-T2 going down, and now sitting together at $1500. Sony’s prices went up, as did the only APS-H mirrorless (Sigma SD Quattro H). The Olympus E-M1 II got its first official discount last week, while the Panasonic GH4 went up in price, perhaps part of the price triangulation to encourage more photographers towards the G9 and GH5.

Speaking of which, we had three new mirrorless cameras in the $1000+ segment since our July 2017 edition. All three are “deputies” price-wise to their flagships, the Sony a7r III, the Panasonic G9 and the Leica TL2. That’s a total of five new mirrorless cameras since July 2017.

“TAKE PICTURES WITH” KITS

I limit “taking pictures with” kit prices to $700 for the purposes of this chart. That’s why the Panasonic G7 is gone from the cart below because it jumped to $800.

As with previous charts, there is not a whole lot of price competition at the bottom. YI Technologies is the newcomer, and they dropped $50 since, but the major manufacturers are refusing to engage in a price war. The two M43rds parents for example have given up on entry-level prices even though they use a smaller sensor system. Even Canon who is the relative newcomer is not in a hurry to compete on price, even though they have a few overlapping models.

NOTES and FOOTNOTES

five new entries since July 2017, the Sony a7r III, Leica TL2, Panasonic G9, Olympus E-M10 III, and Canon M100

since the previous chart, we “lost” the Panasonic G85, Fuji X-T1 IR (hard to find), and Canon M3 and M10. I also made the strategic decision to remove the aging and inactive Nikon 1 System cameras

Prices are more or less uniform among the three tracked retailers
