Record Dimensions on Snapshots

I stumbled across what looks like a very useful application for the iPhone which can be used to document dimensions on almost anything. If you have an iPhone, and are in the business of creating products, or buildings, you may want to look up this very inexpensive (around $4 I think) application to help document your projects...

I can see this little piece of code used for documenting existing structures, for as-builts, or for product research before design.

What the application does is allow you to take a picture, say of a room you are tasked with decorating, or of the front lawn of a home you need to landscape. You then measure using your ordanary measuring instrument (calipers, tape measures, laser based satellite recording device, heheh), and record the dimensions just as you would in a progeCAD drawing. You can then save your work, refer to it later on your iPhone, email it to yourself or others, etc.

Seems useful to somebody I would think...

The ITC is a collective membership of companies creating AutoCAD-compatible, IntelliCAD based software.

Early reports from users who have copies of progeCAD 2010 Professional indicate a home run by progeSOFT with this latest release. Besides users being very pleased with reliability, they have also mentioned the appreciation for the increases in speed not only when using commands inside the IntelliCAD based progeCAD, but also while saving their drawings, which was, in some cases, extremely frustrating with earlier releases of the software.

It seems progeSOFT must have talked extensively with their customers, or at least listened when they talked to them... Several items which were non existent in the product before now have been included in progeCAD 2010 which coincide with items we had heard customers request in the past.

Probably the number one request was for irregular viewports inside Paper Space layouts. progeCAD now has the ability to create non rectangular viewports in paper space. Gradient hatching was delivered, but more importantly, the development of which allowed gradient hatches to be delivered, is grayscale printing and screening while printing. This is a feature that many printers have supported for several years but progeCAD did not provide. Now the output coming from design groups can have some fantastic looking walls, and more than that, they will be able to communicate design intent...

"The Network version of progeCAD 2010 Professional features a new network license manager (NLM) which allows users to check out their licenses and take them with them keeping the software available to them until they return and release the license back to the NLM. This allows users to travel to and from work sites without losing the function of their network licenses while on the trip."

This was also asked about often. While progeCAD could allow a user to "take" his work home, the user had to be connected to the internet and have a constant connection communicating with the license server. Now a user can take his license with him to the job site, home over night to finish that project that is overdue, or even on his annual vacation to tibbuktu!.

These are just a few of the new items but with these additions it is clear progeSOFT not only made some fantastic improvement, but even more important, the LISTENED to their customers. It seems progeSOFT has a winner on their hands, and not only hit a home run with this one, but hit it clean out of the park. Way to go COMO!

What an interesting turn of events. And quite brilliant from a marketing standpoint. Ketiv Technologies, circa 1980-2000 was a value added reseller for Autodesk products, and an Autodesk Registered Developer who sold their flagship product, ArchT, at the time the leading Architectural design application for AutoCAD, to Visio in 1998, and then completed sale of our company the following years to Rand Worldwide, now Imaginit here in the United States. Those familiar with those times may remember that is the years Autodesk decided the "partners" they had in their developer network were taking too much away from the mother ship and put them out of business by expanding into their markets. Thanks Big Brother. Now, the group who split off down in sunny California is now come to claim their rightful territory and refresh the memories of all those great people who worked at Ketiv in the early days here in Portland, and housed in the same office complex as the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium. UCS Tips and Tricks

The UCS can be a tricky concept. It has always been explained using the "left hand" rule whereby if you put your left hand up with your index finger pointing to the sky, your thumb pointing right, and middle finger pointing straight out away from you it is essentially making a UCS and establishing the three dimensions you can work in through progeCAD. (the drawing to the right shows a right hand, which is opposite from the UCS icon built into progeCAD, but nonetheless serves as an example of the left hand rule in practice)

So if you are looking at a plan view of a drawing point your hand straight up with your index finger pointing towards the sky. The easiest method of changing and setting the UCS is by using the UCS command options such as x, y, z, to rotate the ucs into the view that you need.

If you ever get lost in 3D space or you're not sure which orientation your UCS is in, just return to the World Co-ordinate system and use the Plan command.
Always look at the UCS icon to check whether you are in a UCS or in WCS.
Remember, the commands you use will always operate relative to the current UCS.
Remember, the UCSfollow setting does not control the movement of the UCS but the movement of the view when you change to a different UCS.
A good idea for those working in specific planes of reference is to create a template drawing with the UCS already established in the planes you will be working in by naming the UCS and saving them into the template. You can use the template over and over again by simply referring to the UCS name already set in the drawing.
When you are in your active drawing, Always save a UCS if you need to return to it in the future. It might be a good idea to also update your template drawing with this new named UCS so it will be available in the future.
Always be clear in your mind about which are your X, Y and Z axes.
Use the UCSICON command with the ORigin option to force the icon to appear at the UCS origin point. This can be very useful when the drawing gets complicated because it may be difficult to see where your UCS plane is.
If you want to quickly set the UCS to an elevation (relative to WCS) just use one of the presets available from the DDUCSP command dialog box.
The UCS Orientation dialogue box allows you to set the UCS to View, Previous and World.

When you are setting a new UCS it is often easier to do it when looking at your drawing in an axonometric view. Use the DDVPOINT command (View3D ViewpointSelect… from the Pull-down menu) to get a clear view of your drawing.
Use the SHADE command (ViewShadeoptions from the Pull-down menu) to see 3D objects more clearly. 3D objects in wireline can look ambiguous.
Always end your drawing session with the UCS set to World. This avoids confusion next time the drawing is opened.
When using commands like DDVPOINT and DDUCSP, make sure that the option "Absolute to WCS" is checked otherwise the results can be very confusing.
If you find working in 3D confusing you can always construct a simple 3D box around your work as a visual reference. It is also a good idea to use a box as a constructional guide for complex shapes.

A recent story, as reported by many CAD journalists, one of which I will paraphrase here...

The story is that recently the Open Design Alliance (ODA) Associate Membership was changed from a Free Membership to $100 dollars a year. Mr. Yares is making big noises about sueing the ODA for this change in the legal agreement.

We should air out some facts about this situation before we start slapping Mr. Yares on the back for what a great protector of the little guy he is appearing to look like. As some of you may know, Evan Yares was dismissed from the Open Drawing Alliance in October of 2006 under some very, shall we say, shady set of circumstances. While it was never proven that Mr. Yares did anything illegal, you do have to wonder how a person in charge of running a company that is not by any standards very large, can lose track of that much money without having a clue it was missing.

Here is a quote from an article published in AECNEWS.COM in 2006...

"Rumors have been circulating for months about internal problems within the Alliance. AECnews can confirm that an embezzlement investigation involving ODA funds is underway, and that Yares is not considered a suspect. The amount of money at issue is over $500,000. There is also concern within the ODA board regarding Yares’s business relationships beyond the ODA, which sources say represent a potential conflict of interest. When asked about this, Yares had no comment. Yares was asked to step aside recently in an icy conference call meeting of the Alliance board to which Yares was reportedly flanked by a parliamentary procedure expert and a lawyer."

So the altruism of Evan's little foray into trying to save the little guy, defend the week, and battle for the truth and the American way is very suspect. Who knows, perhaps he really is all about the principle of the issue. Perhaps he feels like his legacy is being ruined by those running things now...

A recent story in the Taking Stock section of the Wassau Daily Herald...

Becher-Hoppe Associates employees Mark Pertile, Matt Graun, Daryl Peterson, Lawrence Kempe, Todd Mrochek, Nick Golla, Steve Opatik, Morgan Davis and Archie Becher recently received advanced training on the computer aided design drafting software AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009, developed by Autodesk. Training included AutoCad Map for civil engineers, which involves receiving, editing, reviewing and sending GIS information; advanced roadway design using generic subassemblies, transitions, grading and feature lines; and pipe networks, data shortcuts and 3D modeling. Becher-Hoppe of Wausau is a consulting firm of engineers and architects.

While I can certainly appreciate the effort to learn the Civil Design software from Autodesk, perhaps I can mention that the money the firm spent on the software alone would have probably hired an additional 2 employees, and an alternative, progeCAD 2009 Professional running with progeEARTH Civil Survey CAD Software, could be acquired for about 1/8th the cost. Architectural Technologist - Autocad on the Mac

Boy, is this story in every article, blog, forum, and placard placed out in front of the local coffee shop or what? While I would welcome a native Mac version of AutoCAD, even if they did start working on a version for that platform, it would take years to port the unweildy source code from AutoCAD.

I can't hold my breath that long so for now I am going with virtualization and the recommendations from www.autocadformac.com and their wealth of information on setting up the mac platform to allow you to run AutoCAD on your Mac desktop right alongside native mac applications!

The Beauty of "Magical Paper", or how to determine scale factors in a Model Space Paper Space World

A user entered a question into our forum that is quite common for those who are new to CAD or new to progeCAD's interface...

"how does one set up dimensioning to properly display the underlying scale of the viewport?"

As for your question, it is probably the most asked question of all we receive from customers. The entire viewport, mviews, paper space and model space was confusing to every one when it first was displayed within AutoCAD back in the early 90s. We had been used to nothing but model space, drawing everything at full scale, and then applying a scale factor to our text and dimensions to get them to be the correct size.

Even after paper space and model space came out we continued to apply our dimensions and text to the entities in model space and gave it a scale factor so that when it was viewed in the "paper" it displayed properly.

In those days it would have been insane to put your dimentions into paper space since there was no way to ensure the model would not be moved underneath the paper, although now we have the ability to lock the mview. Although now that I think about it that would not stop someone from moving the model underneath, but I digress...

So the answer to your question of where to put your dimensions is not a straightforward answer unfortunately. There are those who will argue one method or the other is better, and there are probably some who advocate both methods.

So lets look at both methods. The easiest way I found to understand the whole idea of ps/ms is to think the other paper space on your screen as a sheet of paper (obviously), but not just paper, but a special magical type of paper that can fly through the air and precisely focus on a particular object moving in closer or farther away to get precisely the scale of the object it needs to display correctly for a designer or engineer. See, this is magical paper!

So, you take this paper and you cut a hole in it (an Mview?) and look through, and focus on the object you wish to display. Perhaps you look at the top, or you fly around to the side and look through, move farther back to make the object fit in, or up close to see the "details".

Once you have the proper view scale to see the entire object within your viewport you know the scale factor that the object is displayed at. Actually you go at it the opposite way providing scale factors to the MS viewport until the object is zoomed correctly at the scale factor you need. We would use the "xp" option for the zoom command to zoom "times (x) (p)aper space".

can really tell the age of an AutoCAD junky when they start talking about zooming to scale factors and such. I believe it is much easier now to simply apply a scale factor to your viewpoint using the progeCAD properties panel. Click on the mview viewport and and look at the properties panel, one of the options is scale. In this case enter 48 and you are set.

Once we know the MS scale factor we can apply this scale factor to any text or dimension we put inside model space referencing the object. So 1/8" text on a 1/4"=1' drawing would be 1/8" x 48 (48 being the size you would have to scale that building you shrunk down to get it on the paper back to it's original size). You can find the scale factor by dividing 12 inches (ie. 1 foot) by the left part of the scale above (1/4") which equals 48. So the result is that we put our text in at 12" high.

Remember to place these on different layers dependent on the view you are working with and you can then control their display dependent on the view you are looking at. When you plot, simply changeover to paper space and plot your drawing at 1:1 and the dimensions and text will be the correct size on paper.

So, thats how to put them into model space, how do we put them into paper space. The answer to that is easy. Whenever you plot in paper space you plot one to one, so you simply place text and dimensions the same size as you want to see them on paper. You still have to scale the objects within the mview but the magical paper should help you with that!

Hopefully this clears up more than it confuses and allows you to go forward with successful scaling and mviewing!

progeCAD Smart! Darfur help is not the only folks it helps...

Sir

I really need to get ProgeCad Smart. I am a mechanical engineer and I recently lost my job so I cannot afford to buy software at this time. I am well versed in AutoCad, but of course I cannot afford it. I need to maintain my Cad skills while I am looking for a new job, which will propbably take some time.

I had ProgeCad Smart on my home computer but had to replace the hard drive. Now I cannot get your software to register.

What can you do??? Thanks for any help in this matter.

As I told Richard, you can usually get help for install problems by going to the progeCAD Smart and progeCAD Trial forums on the progeSOFT website. That goes for anyone using the trial version of the software. There seems to be always someone around there to answer your questions and point you in the right direction. For Richard I believe he probably passed his limit of free installs. I don't know whether that is one, or 50 but thats probably why he couldnt install. But, I bet if he contacts progeSOFT they would reset his limit. Those folks are just like that. Willing to help, trying to make others lives better.

Which brings me to my point... progeSOFT invented charityware for the express reason of helping people. They started with progeCAD LT back in 2005 and followed up with Smart a few years later. Currently progeCAD Smart users donations go to doctors without borders for Darfur. So, each time someone downloads progeCAD Smart they are asked to give a little to the cause of peace and health for everyone.
